Hello all,

After a recent trip to Le Mans I have come to the conclusion that the standard brakes fitted to my 97 4.2 are not really up to the job.

I am sure there are a number of you who have done such an upgrade. I noticed that most other Cerbs I see around have much beefier brakes than the standards.

Could someone with some experience please outline in fairly simple terms the best options to go for?

I am thinking of getting it done soon as I am sure my discs are slightly warped also. Do drilled discs warp less? I have those green pads on at presnt and find that they fade when warm. Basically any advice would be appreciated.

How about these 8-pot Brembo brakes? Never ending power, greater sensitivity, remove all risk or warping! :-)

What size wheels are you running. Obviously your limited to what size discs you can run if you've got the 16 inch wheels on.

Standard 4.5 discs with decent pads, high grade fluid (Dot 600) and braided hoses are easliy enough to lock a wheel at 80+ without much pedal pressure.

I am on 16" wheels unfortunately. So the 4.5 discs are bigger than the 4.2? What about the calipers? What are the benefits of braided hoses - less pressure loss I presume?

Danny, those brakes do sound the mutts nuts - I am not sure I am willing to spend 3k on them just yet!

Thanks Jools,

After carrying out that search on google a familiar looking web-page was suggested at the top of the pile!

Ahem, I have seen a brake upgrade kit for £835 fitted. Is this going to solve all of my woes? Will I never have to press the pedal and pray any more?

Doesn't that depend on how close to a corner you start braking?

To approach the problem from another angle, how good is the brake cooling on a standard 4.2? Is there anything to be gained by scoops etc?

God bless the internet then and praise be to my web designer who obviously knows his onions.
On the brake issue .. you can't get better than increasd rotor diameter, it means better heat capacity, increased linear speed of rotor past pad for any given angular speed which helps by reducing pad grab on disc so you can modulate braking at the limit of tyre adhesion. A higher spec disc and pad means better transfer of pad to disc surface, less localised heating and less warping,wider heat range, grooved discs get rid of pad resin vapour reducing pad float on the disc surface, etc etc. yeah I'd say it was a win win win situation. whether it cures HIV and stops 15 year olds getting pregnant though is debatable..
