Just fitted an oil temp gauge and went for a spin.

On empty roads it hardly went above 50 C but in town and stuck in traffic it would sit around the 80 C mark.

Are these normal cause I thought 50 C would have been a bit low but maybe not.

Seems normal to me. I see 50C when cruising in the T350 and 70 - 80 in traffic. Can't imagine the AJP would be significantly different.

Andy,
How long does it take for the oil to get up to the 50 C. Just be nice to know ............. i normally wait until i have driven 10 mile or so before taking it above 2500 rpm.

Let me get back to you on that, I only fitted it the other day and didn't really know how hot it would get. Ended up doing 40 miles wondering when it was going to get over 50 C. I'll take her for a drive tonight or tomorrow and let you know.

The oil cooler on the cerb probably doesn't have a thermostat, so in this weather all that cold air is probably cooling the oil nicely. I think 80 degrees is around ideal for most engines I think. Between 80 and 120 is ok for full synthetic though.

On the Radical I have to tape up over half of the (enormous) oil cooler in cold weather so the oil gets up to above 70.

50c seems a bit low to me. I run at between 80-100c depending on how hard i'm driving in my Golf.

No idea with the Cerb though, I assume the laptop will be able to tell someone without the need to rig up a dial.

Where are you measuring the temp? You can get 20-30 degrees difference depending on which side of the cooler it is etc.

The Tuscan drives potters around (1800 RPM in 4th/5th) at just over 50 degrees. Have yet to see what it goes up to when really thrashing it, but I think it was around 70 when "making progress" on the M1.

Nope. There is no oil temp sensor as standard on the AJP.

Where did you fit the sensor - replaced the sump plug?

I doubt it as there is no oil temp sensor AFAIK. I measure the oil temp on the output from the oil filter to the oil cooler. ARound 80 is normal but can go as high as 110-120 if being really hammered. The flow back from the cooler into the sump is about 30 degrees lower. If the sensor is in the sump then the lower oil temp could well be normal.

I got Austec to fit the oil temp sender on the oil filter housing, above the filter on the passenger side of the engine, (same place as Joolz fitted it on mlumb's car) and wired it through to a Smiths electrical oil temp gauge where my middle speaker used to be.

Only been out with it the once and it was quite cold and breezy.

When making progress it sat between 50 and 60 and while pottering through traffic it got up to about 80 but never any higher than that.

I'll try and get a couple of piccies later.

yup the cerbie has no thermostat as std for the oil cooler, in this weather it'll never get high enough .. the last thing you need is a larger cooler! I'd be blanking it off completely in winter, you have that finned alloy sump anyway.

In my S the oil temp never even registers on the gauge in normal driving but can get to 70 on the motorway after a loooooooong time, up to 130 at mania on the runway when it was really hot weather.

But ... that's crazy! Doesn't this mean that Cerbs are routinely driving round with the oil well below normal operating temperature?

My Chim 500 runs at 70-80 around town and 90-100 on motorways, with the water temp the opposite more or less. Should I consider a cooler? The temp is measured at the sump plug.

So is there a thermostat conversion, Jools? Seems like another opportunity for you!

People like Mocal sell in line thermostats which bypass the cooler until the set temperature around 60-90 quid I think, not including new hoses
