If the OEM shocks were Bilstein, why are they considered to be cheap and substandard?

Bilstein make good shocks. But TVR fitted an off the shelf shock from Bilstein to save costs, and they were just the wrong spec for the Cerbera.

Still a good shock though. Before restoring my Cerb, it had OE shocks and was very planted. No skitting over cats eyes/bumps or road camber steer. I only changed them as a matter of updating and wanting adjustable items.

My chim did 137.000 miles on its original Bilsteins, nothing wrong with them.

The plating on the piston rod failed on mine which isn't a sign of good quality to me. That had shredded the seals and caused the oil to leak out.

Didn't want the same to happen again so swapped them out.

I'm currently removing my oem shocks, but my spring compressors don't fit on the coils as i want to remove them to see if the shock is still okay.

Hi

I bought a used set of OEM shocks/springs off the fleebay at much cheapness Turns out my Cerb has a mix and match set from it's green star days. I guess what ever they had lying around at the time. The front shock let go while laid up but it has been misting since last mot lol. Did well to last 5k.

What ones go where short ones on the front or long?

Going to run these first and see how i get on for a fraction of the price of new ones, Got to be worth a punt.

Mine has standard shocks, planted is not how I would describe it. Bumps like drain covers are a nightmare, need to get them looked at. The reality is that they shouldn't need replacing but most owners seem to go for upgrades and report improvements.

Hi Scott, I'm currently changing the springs on my Bilstein shocks.

Mine were originally green Eibach springs on the rear and red on the front.

Also, the springs should be 9" (375 LBS) up front and 10" (300 LBS) on the rear.

Hope this helps.
