How easy is it to connect up the ECU to a laptop, whats needed software wise and what type of cable do you need. Once connected up is it easy to look at engine problems etc ?

MBE lead pinouts in the pic. Others have used standard rs232 leads (shop bought tend to be fully connected). I made my own and just used the rx, tx and ground pins as I didn't want any extra pins connected as you never know what is on them. People do some strange things with serial ports and the trouble with standards is everyone has one

clicky for MBE diagram

edit to add disclaimer:- your own risk etc, you know the rest.

Just dragged this post up as I've actually managed to get a PC Laptop up and running so now I need to make a lead up.

My question is...

To fit the resistors is it as simple as soldering them onto the relivent pins as per the diagram?

Bit new to this DIY Electronics lark so any advise appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

PS: I might be selling the laptop that I've just bought, Compaq, Armada PII 266, 190Mb, 6Gb. As I've got wind of a better machine, so if anyone's interested in buying it with software and lead let me know. <-- Sorry Ted not too much of a plug I hope.

Tim,
I just followed the advice on here and just bougth a 1.8m serial extention cable from PC World about £8, worked fine, just had to cut the securing screws off the connector to the ECU was the only snag.
Have fun.
