I think that list was written by someone's wife wink Surely it's as much to do with priorities as it is money? I choose to run a small fleet of Italian cars (worth a lot in relation to the value of the house) on a relatively frugal budget. I will however concede that my wife is now suggesting it might be time to adjust that ratio...

Let's assume she has superhuman powers of suggestion, which one(s) would go first and why? Lets also assume that she is a keeper wink

The OP was 25, his partner 24; I suspect that little Karl1982s may have come along and he has other things on his mind as he visits the in-laws at the w/e in a 1.9TDi estate car with an Isofix seat and a booster seat in the back, a sticky bit between them, a couple of plastic dinosaurs and a dummy lost somewhere under the front seats while "inciwincy spider" (my spelling may be wrong here) plays over and over again on the audio as the older one grumbles because they can't concentrate on the game on their tablet.

here is the simple list

$20,000 salary = $4,000 car
$40,000 salary = $8,000 car
$80,000 salary = $16,000 car
$140,000 salary = $28,000 car
$200,000 salary = $40,000 car
What a strange and random 1st post on PH.

My car cost approx 50% more than my salary.

The simple list would have been simpler if it had been "20% of salary".

My actual history is:

Salary: Car
£14,500: £1,000
£22,000: £2,500
£60,000: £27,000
£105,000: £100,000

A few missed out in between (and after....). As time goes on, investments and other factors such as rising house prices etc, help out. Similarly, kids and other natural disasters have the opposite effect.

So the bottom line is that it's not only salary that counts.

Cool, need to have a chat with my boss
I would say it is a matter of priorities - and for car guys I would say you can possibly reverse your figures

This. Kinda.

Quite why you'd create some cost correlation between value of house, salary and car cost is beyond me.

A 100k car costs about the same as a 200k house - in terms of monthly payments - and 200k doesn't get you an outstanding house.

Odd post.

Definitely not sensible to compare the two IMHO.
House is generally an appreciating asset with demand outpacing supply.
Car is generally a depreciating asset with supply managed to match supply (except for some classics and the odd special edition).
Buying a depreciating asset with debt means you pay twice.

Wow! I haven't been on this forum for years and today I decide to log on and have a look. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw my post sitting at the top of the list!

Well I'm 34 now and still no supercar! Grown up a bit since then, and decided that investing was a more sensible option and plan a bit further ahead financially.

Have 3 properties now - one of which is a HMO multi let giving decent returns, currently in the process of getting a 4th one next month through a ltd company.

Tried making an iOS game with some firends on the iPhone. Made a few quid and got the Mrs a nice engagement ring smile

Also have a start up company making real money gambling games. Early days but we might have our foot in the door with a few big gaming operators over here in the UK.

Current car is a Vauxhall Astra van 1.7 cdti and a 10 year old 118d! For messing about I have a 2 stroke rotax max kart which I did my first season of racing in last year.

Had a few nice holidays with the mrs too.

So as you can see, still no supercar but maybe one day biggrin

well i guess thats the sensible approach, don't be too sensible though your along time dead wink

for example when you posted in 2007 i had just finished having radiotherapy after months of chemotherapy, since then i've been discharged with the all clear.... i've also had 2x Z4M Coupes, 997 Carrera S, 981 Boxster S, Ferrari F430, Ford Racing Puma and a BMW M4 Comp Pack, i also replaced the Turbo Technics engine in my XR4i with Mustang V8 biggrin though i do have only one house and no pension whatsoever.... need to get on that planning for the future thing;)

Good to hear that things are going well!

The scenario was a little autobiographical - the 1.9 TDi estate and dinosaurs have gone and as the children are all 21+ and almost off the payroll I've indulged in an Italian with a V8 F136RB (from a marque which has been chucked off this forum to its own one.)
