Hia all!
A while back (read May 05) my Lambo was stolen by someone posing
as a potential buyer. Now, I've tried to report it stolen but
the police won't let me report it stolen as I've actually handed
over the keys.
Any suggestions on what to do?
It does not really help that the car is reged in one country
the incident happen in another (UK) and I currently live in a third
and this potential buyer might be from a fourth.

You’re stuffed. Why did you wait until now to report it? The only option I think you would have is to pursue the would be buyer through the civil courts. If you handed over the keys this is a civil case and not criminal so the police aren’t interested. The police would put it in the same category as you pursuing a client for work you have done but they have not paid you for.
Perhaps if you can prove he duped you into handing over the keys with the intention of making away with the car the guy could be prosecuted for fraud which is a criminal offence I believe.
Of course if he’s done a runner with the car and you have no contact details for him then as I said: you’re stuffed. Unless you have some contacts in the underworld?
P.S. I’m not a lawyer so someone else on here could come along and tell me I’m talking bollox

No, its still stolen.
I assume you handed over the keys for a test drive. In which case after a reasonable amount of time has passed (we're talking hours here, max 1 day) they should accept it as stolen.
The report should be filed in the country it was stolen in.
There must be something more to this. I can't see how they would not tag it as stolen. Your insurance company I can understand may have some reservations about paying out, if you handed over the keys. And didnt accompany for the test drive.

Thanks all for your input!
Now, I do have some details. I've got two email addresses with two different names, none of
these names corresponds to the name this person used, he just used his nick. I also know
that he is a friend of a former collegue if mine, but this collegue has not got his address,
they only know each other from the gym. I also got an Orange mobile telephone number, but
Orange won't let me have any account details.
No, I have not waited until now to report it. I've made repeated attempts to report the
car stolen just after this happened. This muppet is also from what I understand... a lawyer.
Also, I just found an old email kicking about. It has a letterhead and I checked their
website and found a name of another laywer that I once was recommended by this muppet.
Surely this lawyer know who the muppet is and his whereabouts. One step closer.

I agree. I can only assume he handed the keys over to this guy to take a test drive in his Lambo without accompanying the potential buyer who then disappeared with said car.
I would always insist on accompanying anyone who is test driving one of my cars whether it be the Mondeo or the Fezza. In fact I’d be extremely reluctant to let them test drive the thing at all unless they could come up with original documentation proving they were insured. Otherwise they’d have to settle for a passenger seat ride with me driving.
I don’t know the facts here but as you say it all sounds very odd.
Why don't you post details of the car? It must need a service sometime?
If the thief is a lawyer, won't they be registered with the law society?
Have you tried www.192.com to try and track him down?
Why did you give him the keys?

Morning all!
Now, I'll try to reply to you all in one go.
stone: odd to say the least.
t1grm: I met this muppet a few times before and we already went a test drive, and as I
said he is a friend of a former colleuge. The deal was that he could have it properly
checked with a dealer/shop to verify the condition of the car. This was expected to
take about two days, including we both would attend at the start of the Gumball 3000
and all that jazz. So I had confidence in letting him have it so to speak. Since then
he had played up with all sorts of stuff, like resons for not paying, installments talk and
that the car was in bad nick and he already spent some £15k on it. Who knows, it might
still be in the shop and if I'd ask for it back I'll probably have to pick up a hefty bill
of work possibly never done.
SJN2004: Why don't I post the details? Well, I'd like to not stir in it too much as
this guy could easily create fake invoices for work done on the car that I then need
to pick up.... or just anyting. Remember this guy is a lawyer (on the international
arena) so I would not stand a chance. Just posting here could cause me grief as he might
be lurking here for wot I know. Nope, I've not tried 192.com, trying now. I know some
of the of the lambo dealers authorized or not around europe (mainly in the SE and .ch), I
also help lamborghiniregistry.com and I'm a member of the UK, US and Danish Lambo
clubs so it would be easy for me to just send off some emails to these people and soon
enough the car would be spotted if not already passed on in parts. I could already here
and now post details of it and pictures as the car got its own website, but I'll leave
it for the time being. Some of you might already sussed out who I am.
shnozz: Yep it sure was insured and still is. I'm paying insurance (and road tax) so he
can have fun with _my_ car, good innit!?
All I wanted was to make room for another toy.
Last time seen was outside my Mayfair home, I even got pictures of that...
It all sounds too similar to this BBC story, only this was a replica.

as these are so rare if you say what model lambo, and what colour/spec it was there is quite a high possibility that someone on here has seen it, which may lead you to roughly what area the car is in?
ask lamborghini to tell their dealers to keep an eye out for it by giving them the chassis numbers (if you know them)
hope you get it back though

Yep! I sure got all the details of the car. I've got more than 200 pages of
documentation, several thousand pictures, hours of video and most of its
journeys logged by gps. I know quite a few people over at the factory and
I've even met some people that remembered building it as there were only a
handfull built the way mine was. It also been in quite a few magazines
worldwide so it would be easy to spot on the road. I've got an idea of
where it could be (unless its been taken apart and sent to Russia

So what you are saying is you gave a car to someone you didn't know, didn't verify their background? You sure you're not a troll mate? No Tracker? You haven't contacted the law society. Spoken to a private investigator?
It would be dead easy to find that car given he is known amongst your wider network.
Your story is full of holes. He stole the car yet he calls you to talk about making time payment and or you call him and he argues about making payment.

burwoodman: I had no reason to suspect anything as I trusted my collegue that his guy was ok.
The guy claim he owns the lawfirm, yesterday I found out which one and I contacted them
this morning. No, there were no tracker in the car. And I'm sorry to say I don't know what
the law society is. I have not yet spoken to a PI, but this has now been suggested to me and
I might pick that up. And as you say, it should not be too hard to find the car. Yep, he did
call me at some point after that I called him some 100 times and left voice mail, I can only
assume he did so in order to stall me in fire off an investigation or call the boys in.
Once at a police station in Marylebone a PC called him up and after a 2 minute chat the PC
refused me to report the car stolen. What other holes do you find in my story? Thanks for
calling me a troll, I knew it would happen one day, you're the first.
maserati3200gt: I've got a spare key, but I live quite far away from England now and what if
the car is not kept at his? Also, I'd rather have it sold than getting it back as I've
intended to spend the money on another car.
burwoodman & Mr_C: It is a Diablo and the last time I checked it was not a crummy replica (as
in the BBC story I found yesterday). I really thought Lambos would not attract car thieves
as I could imagine it would be hard to pass the car on considering there are not too many
of them.
