hopefully the right place to put this...

I've just my renewal through from Footman James to cover 5 cars - it's gone up 25% since last year so obviously going to look at alternatives! I've not made any claims, but looks like they have changed the underwritter.

before I ring around all the usual suspects, i thought it was best to ask for recommendations / try to rule out those that wont be competitive as I find you have to go through the whole process with each insurer or broker before they will give any kind of indicative (even ball park) quote. I'd like to get down to a short list of 2 or 3 to run a full quote through with.

so, can anyone recommend a broker or ins who can cover:
- 5 cars, some modified.
- central london address (gated private carpark, but not garaged)
- unlimited mileage across the cars
- class 1 business use
- trackday cover (currently limited to 3 days a year)
- agreed value
- salvage rights
- European cover

happy to hear from any PH brokers who might be able to help too.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I think I tried pace-ward a couple of years ago and they wouldn't cover (either competitively, or at all) high value cars which were not garaged. will check again. Manning, Hiscox and Chubb seem to get mentioned a lot, so those 4 look like a reasonable place to start. hopefully we can get to a ballpark number without hours on the phone going through all the details!

is it worth trying adrian flux etc?

in terms of 'quality' of cover, as long as any repair work is factory recommended / authorised and windscreens are covered, I'm not bothered about 'extras' such as like-for-like car replacement, breakdown cover, travel insurance etc.

Correctly called me out as a cheapskate ;-) in all seriousness, I might add them to the list - the renewal is high, but not unpalatable, allowing other people to drive my cars would be quite handy, although I've added named drivers to the current policy for just the cost of the admin fee in the past - seems everyone else is a lower policy risk than me! so if they are similar to footman or even slightly more expensive I might consider it.

Go to Quantum plc and ask for a Chubb Masterpiece policy.

Gives fully comp on any vehicle and anyone to drive your fleet. Agreed value on all cars.

Very good policy but if OP's criteria is cost then unlikely to be a viable option ... they were 4x more expensive than the insurer I eventually went with !

I think they have problems with modified cars and I dont think we would quote be on unlimited mileage for the expensive stuff, but might be worth a try.

I know I will get shot down in flames, but Admiral multi-car have always looked after me. They insure 11 cars of mine. they always come in with a dramatic increase, but each year I call up and they bring the premiums back down. I don't think they do track insurance, but then you can always get separate day insurance for that.

UPDATE

So, the process was a little painful with half of the companies on the short-list not having simple contact email addresses - I dont have time to talk to them all on the phone and wanted to pre-qualify them out if they wouldn't cover bits I needed.

Anyway... I've ended up with a fantastic deal with Locktons (Chubb policy). Not only is it cheaper than my renewal, it's cheaper than I paid last year (which I thought was a good deal!). The real 'wow' part is that they are now covering all my cars (9 vehicles in total) - for less 25% less than my 5-car renewal. Saved me £2-3k.

Apparently I'm the ideal risk for them - quite a few cars, not many drivers on the policy, eclectic collection etc.

Only thing they couldn't do is trackday cover, but with the huge saving I can do a lot of trackdays with individual cover!

Very pleased.

Just to add...

I wont name names, but most of the brokers admitted they could get no where near the quote I ended up with. Worth noting Locktons said the average age of the collection will impact the premium, cars over 10 years old are much more attractive to their under-writer than recent stuff (presumably the latest cars are stolen more). As I have a car from 1966 that helped drag the average down nicely! They are happy to cover highly modified and race cars within the policy too which is excellent as previously I needed separate policies on a couple of cars.

It seems finding an underwriter policy that matches your personal niche is quite important.
