Ferrari launches stunning concept
612 P4/5 uses Enzo chassis and 660bhp V12
Ferrari and Pininfarina have come up with a stunning concept car, called the 612 P4/5. Based on the Enzo, it's inspired by the famous 1960s P4 racer (see pic).
The two-seater houses the Enzo's 660bhp V12 and sits on a modified version of its carbon-fibre chassis. The car's likely to be faster than the Enzo since it weighs less than the icon's 1,365kg and, according to reports, performs better in wind tunnels too.
Officially a one-off, the car is said by Pininfarina to be much more than just a concept. It was created to explore the outer edges of the company's design ideas, while ensuring that the car was road-legal, with the aim of showing a possible route for Ferrari's future design.
It cost some £2.6 million to develop and was initially designed by Ken Okuyama and his team. Okuyama was behind the Maserati Birdcage show car (see link below) which wowed at the Festival of Speed 2005, as well as Ferrari's forthcoming 599GTB Fiorano.
The car was tough to produce, since Ferrari had to find a donor Enzo. It tracked one of the rare cars down – only 399 were ever made – at a Beverly Hills dealer and bought it for £800,000.
While the 612 P4/5 is unlikely to be produced en masse, it's set to debut on 20 August at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California. Shame it'll miss the FoS then...
For copyright reasons, we don't have pictures of the new car but we know a site that does (see link below).

The chap commissioned Pininfarina himself to build it, how come Ferrari seem to be taking the credit for this one? Or was that a seperate project (seems unlikely given the timing)
"Officially, the car is a one-off, but our Pininfarina source admitted that it's much more than simply a concept, as it has been cre-ated to explore the wilder side of the design firm's creativity, as well as Ferrari's future. To do that properly, it was essential to ensure the machine would be road legal."
"However, the car is due to hit the road shortly - and is sure to stop traffic when it does!"
Exciting news . . .
Edit: Ford GT, New Miura . . . Now Ferrari is getting the retro-fever. They've made enough yum-stuff in the past. In the past that is

Basically the car is being commissioned by a wealthy American banker who already owns a pair of original 330p3/p4/412p as well as another significant early Ferrari and a wide assortment of other rare toys!
Its also interesting to note that the car pictured in auto express doesn’t look like the shots of the clay styling prototype that the cars owners has shared offline with a number of people........but they are correct in saying that this it is going to be a far far better looking car than the enzo
The build of this car really does show the way that enthusiasts can use web forums like Piston heads and Ferrarichat to not only keep up to date with the industry and projects but in this case actually have more information from the source. And also a good testament to this owner’s generosity for sharing the whole process that most of us cannot afford to undertake

How have Ferrari been credited with any of this? As Andrew mentions, the project is brainchild of a well known US collector who has commisioned P-F to design a car to HIS spec . Ferrari have had ZERO input other than supplying the donor Enzo.
My understanding is that Jim isnt even sure if he wants to put the Ferrari badges back on it.....the photos of the styling buck have PF logo's on the front and lets face it Ferrari didnt supply the donor he had to buy it from FoBH & no doubt had to pay a premium!

Ferrari's light fantastic
Could it be the world's ultimate supercar? Combining the skills of legendary design house Pininfarina with the pace of an Enzo, Ferrari's latest coupé is set to turn the performance car class on its head when it is unveiled this summer.
Auto Express was granted exclusive access to the futuristic-looking machine, which was inspired by the famous P4 racer of the Sixties. Called the 612 P4/5, the two-seater has the Enzo's V12 engine and is based on a modified version of that car's carbon chassis.
It will make its world debut on 20 August at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California, and is estimated to have cost at least £2.6million to produce.
Officially, the car is a one-off, but our Pininfarina source admitted that it's much more than simply a concept, as it has been cre-ated to explore the wilder side of the design firm's creativity, as well as Ferrari's future. To do that properly, it was essential to ensure the machine would be road legal.
The P4/5 was sketched out by a team led by Ken Okuyama - the man behind last year's stunning Maserati Birdcage show car and Ferrari's upcoming 599 GTB Fiorano.
An Enzo chassis is wrapped in the carbon bodywork, which incorporates a full roll cage. From behind the wheel, the windscreen, roof and rear of the cabin are all see-through. As a result, there's incredible visibility, and a fantastic sense of space.
The nose is shorter and more aggressive than the Enzo's, while echoes of the classic P4 racer run from nose to tail. At the rear, underbody aerodynamics are clearly visible, and are designed to maintain stability at the predicted top speed of more than 220mph.
Inside, the two-seater has been custom fitted to accommodate even the most demanding owners' needs, and there will be an assortment of hi-tech in-car entertainment for the passenger to play with. Power is kept at the V12 Enzo's original 660bhp, and the six-speed F1-style gearbox also remains unchanged.
Because the curvy new body is said to perform better than the Enzo's in the wind tunnel, the P4/5's acceleration is claimed to be an improvement. What's more, the prototype weighs less than the Enzo's 1,365kg, so the custom-built machine is set to be one of the fastest cars on the planet.
Getting to this point hasn't been easy, though. The first challenge was to find a donor vehicle. Only 399 Enzos were ever built, and a worldwide search turned up an unregistered 2003 model in Beverly Hills with an £800,000 price tag.
Only once it had been bought could the designers start to create the P4/5's shape. The next phase has cost £1.8million so far, and it's still not finished... However, the car is due to hit the road shortly - and is sure to stop traffic when it does!
