Ferrari P4/5: price revealed

Owner wants to drive it not show it

Stunning Ferrari P4/5
Stunning Ferrari P4/5
James Glickenhaus has revealed more about the thinking behind the gorgeous, curvy Ferrari P4/5, which we reported on Monday this week (see story link below). He carved it out of a Ferrari Enzo at a cost of $4 million.

It turns out the initiative for the car came from Pininfarina. The design house approached Glickenhaus, and asked him if he was interested in commissioning a one-off car. Glickenhaus said he'd be interested in a car that looked like a P4 but built on an Enzo chassis.

Developing the street-legal Enzo-based P4/5 soon took up the man's time -- and that of his friend and personal mechanic, Sal Barone, who has restored Glickenhaus' car collection. Both spent considerable time in Turin as a result.

Glickenhaus reckoned that he got good value for the money he spent -- and that he'll be at only the Concours d'Elegance at Pebble Beach and the Paris Motor Show because he wants to spend more time enjoying driving the car.

That's the spirit!

When he had paid the $4 mill perhaps the exhaust had not been fitted, Or perhaps it was out sourced to Kwick-Fit...in a "Well now the cheque has cleared lets......"

Everyone is right. This a jaw-droppingly beautiful car, but whoever added those exhausts was surely having a laugh. Mr Glickenhaus appears to be a man of discretion, more than adequate resources and - in other respects - good taste. Ownership of the original P4 demonstrates that. So were those pipes signed off without him seeing and approving them? With no disrespect meant to those so afflicted, this is like sculpting the Venus de Milo and giving her a club foot.

Comment of the year. Raised a belly-laugh from my corner of the office.

Not at all. I like them very much especially as they really help the aerodynamics by in filling the hole left by the greenhouse and adding down force by increasing flow to the movable rear spoiler which is quite a bit bigger than the one on the Enzo. We've also added a 1/2 inch Gurney flap to the movable front aero devices which really help to lower the Cx as well. Check out the specs. on the PF web site and watch the following video. Note what happens when I pull away from the toll booth and up shift. Even with much better Aero. than the Enzo both in balance, down force, and lower Cx the rear tires break a bit free. Part of this is due to the weight we took off, we're at 2440 lbs., but even with more tire than the Enzo and the added down force that the exhaust provides we are at the limit. We haven't done ultra high speed testing yet but at reasonable high speed I really could feel the exhaust helping to smooth the air flow and keep the car pressed down. This is especially true when I compare it to driving my MK-IV which makes 953 lbs of lift at 223mph. Due to her lower weight and better aerodynamics I believe that we've built the fastest road legal Ferrari ever and also believe that we'll
see 1-100kms in very close to 3 seconds and touch 240mph with stability. (I speed I personally am not planning to reach but who knows what my Grand Kids might attempt one crazy day)

Not a bad effort at all by all accounts. If the quality of finish and workmanship is good then it's probably quite good value for money too. I don't expect Honda could build you a one-off based on a Civic for anything less so a very well respected Ferrari base with a Pinin style body. Lovely jubly I agree with the post above - get it used and get it mucky...!

Each to his own, James, and like the rest of the admirers, I'm still dusting the gravel off my jaw from my first sight of your car. And there's no questioning the technical efficacy. It is only that such a stunning job has been done to create a modern interpretation of one of the most beautiful cars ever designed, it comes as a surprise that the exhausts are rather less than smoothly integrated.

Hi

In real life they some how do look different as does the entire car. Another issue is that until we see how hot the exhaust gets the wing in high downforce mode we're preceeding with caution re: tweaking their shape.

Welcome to PH. So cool to own a one off like that. Hopefully you'll have a stash of spares too.
