If you can't get flames at least a foot high off the BBQ your not trying hard enough.

Question for his Lordship and Tilley expert.

I got my lamp yesterday, been out and got some meths and parafin today, fired it up this afternoon.

The mantle is a bit crap, do they vary? I fitted it as instructed, and it looked like a big wide brimmed sombrero, then when I burnt it off, it shrank to a better size, but it appears almost broken around where the sombrero rim was before it shrank, it's also a very irregular shape. It doesnt burn as brightly or as cleanly as I expected. No yellow flame, but there is still an orange/blue lick at the top of the mantle as it goes up into the flu. Is this normal?

It appears to have a steady'ish hiss, but it also pulses ever so slightly. Re-lighting and following the troubleshooting tips doesn't appear to make any difference.

I suspect that it is working properly and my expectations may be too high, that's all. Or I think it may be just a crap mantle? Do you know what the difference is between the standard 164X mantle and the 164H 'happy' mantle? are they interchangeable and is the 'happy' mantle better? I might fit another just to see if it makes a difference.

What do you reckon?

Not at all. It all burns off and usually use very very little. Only really good for making huge flames once everything has been cooked!

The mantle is a bit crap, do they vary?

Can do possibly, but i've not known it

I fitted it as instructed, and it looked like a big wide brimmed sombrero,

sounds about right

then when I burnt it off, it shrank to a better size,

again typical - now it is fairly fragil - dont touch or it'll collapse, but normally ok being transported (keep a spare handy when away camping)

but it appears almost broken around where the sombrero rim was before it shrank, it's also a very irregular shape.

without seeing it cant say if its ok or not - it should basically shrink, but keep the spiders web appearance - both of my lamps have slightly lop sided mantles, but there shouldnt be any large holes in the mantle

It doesnt burn as brightly or as cleanly as I expected. No yellow flame, but there is still an orange/blue lick at the top of the mantle as it goes up into the flu. Is this normal?

i've found it improves with use, so keep going at it for a while, you may find the mantle brightens after a while - also try once its going to give it a good few pumps to build the pressure up which will brighten the lamp

It appears to have a steady'ish hiss, but it also pulses ever so slightly. Re-lighting and following the troubleshooting tips doesn't appear to make any difference.

yes this in an un-usual one - of the 2 i posted above - the newer red one does the same, while the older gold one doesnt. get a steady hiss going hiSSSsssssSSSsssssSSSsssssSSSsssssSSSsssssSSSsssss ? with the light level pulsing too? i dont know what causes it, but it does seem to go away after a while of it being lit - depending on the ambient temperature

I suspect that it is working properly and my expectations may be too high, that's all. Or I think it may be just a crap mantle? Do you know what the difference is between the standard 164X mantle and the 164H 'happy' mantle? are they interchangeable and is the 'happy' mantle better? I would say with a pack of 164H mantles costing about £2 its worth a shot - seems they are interchangeable from a quick google as both are for the 300candle lanterns - which is what your tilley is rated at.

If you're not happy with the way the mantle is, or it has developed large holes, break it off and remove the string from the groove around the brass burner body.
Fit the new mantle by sliding the larger opening over the spigot and stretch it into the groove around the burner body. Then stretch the smaller end into the groove at the bottom of the spigot.
Arrange the fabric of the mantle evenly around the burner to ensure correct shape when the mantle is burnt. Replace enamelled hood back on the lantern ensuring the vapouriser tube passes up into the centre of the spigot.

When the spirit torch is applied for the first time after fitting the new mantle will burn and smoke. - try putting a fair bit of meths on the spirit torch so it will burn for a while and hopefully fully burn down the mantle.

I will not be bringing any carrots but may well have the w*nk torch with me. Not good at heating but looks very sinilar to grating a carrot when being charged and a lot better for seeing by.

Right, I'm bringing the chimenea (no, look at the spelling!) ... we've had 6-7ft flames out of the top of them buggers before ... I think Psychobert has some photographic proof somewhere... like a pair of jet engines on afterburn
