Just been browsing your Flickr site, some really good shots on there. I like the processing on your images, any chance of sharing the technique?
If you let me know an example image I can tell you exactly what I did (as the software I use non-destructively applies the settings to produce the output, so all the settings for a given image are saved). As a general rule my basic workflow is something like this (I'm not great with optimising the camera settings in the field, so I have to mess with most images):- Shoot in raw (gives more scope for adjusting exposure/white balance/tone curves than using a jpg as a starting point - it means the starting point doesn't have any of the camera's built in tweaks applied). When just shooting out and about outside I tend to shoot with slight negative exposure compensation as my nikon tends to blow out highlights a bit too easily to the point where I can't even recover them in raw.
- Load into photo processing software (I use Bibble 5, which is akin to Adobe's lightroom I believe)
- Pick only the shots that are a reasonable starting point (I'm not a natural photographer, so I take a fair few rather crappy shots!)
- Fix the white balance if the camera's guess is wrong
- Adjust the white/black points if necessary, tweak the exposure
- Tweak the tone curve to get the light of the image feeling right - I usually boost the contrast with an S curve (the shape/size of the curve will depend on the light in the original image), although I also sometimes make use of a plugin in Bibble called "Angy" which has simple sliders for applying a contrasty effect: http://www.flickr.com/groups/gimpusers/discuss/721...
- Add a little sharpening if necessary
- Crop/slightly rotate the photo if necessary, as I'm rubbish at composition through the lens for some reason I usually have to adjust the crop (I find it easier to do it in post)
Depending on the image I may also do the following:
- Apply slight vignette if the image feels a bit too flat and the subject could do with a bit more attention drawing to it
- Selectively adjust portions of the image... Sometimes this is to manually recover areas where the light isn't great or is out of balance (often if shooting in bright sunlight), sometimes I'll do it to isolate the subject a bit more (slight contrast boost of subject over the rest, sometimes slight desaturation of the background, etc). Bibble makes this really easy with its layers and regions
- Clone out visually distracting background stuff if it's easy to do (again, if there's some areas that can be cloned over a small piece of background clutter Bibble makes this really easy with its heal/clone layer).
- Sometimes just go a bit mad with colour adjustments/contrast, sometimes use a Bibble plugin to simulate the tone curves of classic film/photo stock
Hope that helps - like I say if you let me know a specific image that caught your eye I can tell you exactly what I did, and even show you the baseline image if you're interested in how much tarting up went on .

Thanks for this, lots to read and try! The effect I really liked was on the shots of the Ferrari 250 GT Lusso.
Olly
I'll check when I get home this evening but I think the Lusso shot was one of the ones which looked pretty decent straight off (although I have tweaked it). I used my Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 lens for that, with the aperture at f/3.2 to give a reasonably shallow depth of field (hence the front of the car is nice and sharp with a smooth blurring further back to make it pop out from the background). The light was also great for the Lusso at that moment, which helped! I tend to have my camera on aperture priority mode most of the time to allow me to select the aperture and thus depth of field to use and the shallow depth of field from a fast lens can work really well for a square-on car shot. The other thing I did with that shot is fake a gradient filter (there's a Bibble plugin for that) just to bring out the cloud detail - faking it isn't as good as using a real filter, but is easier .Olly
This is another example of where I think I nailed the shallower depth of field and focal point just right (using my trusty 35mm f1.8 lens set at f2.2):

lots of impressive technical stuff
This is why i leave photography to those who know what they are doing.I know all of the words in your post but when you put them together in that particular order and it sounds like a foreign language

The Lettuceheads weren't performing this year so thanks to, newcomers to the event, Canvas Wall for providing the music. Also big thanks to Mark, Cliff and Sophie for helping with the cameras, it meant I was able to get away from the track for a bit and shoot some of the other stuff that was going on.

I remember when photography was an art form, these days it's more about IT! Likewise with the video editing, that side of things drive me nuts but I got there in the end.
I think it was more about chemistry than IT back in the day Great video
Oh, and cheers guys. I have loads more footage of onboard laps and the Caterham runs which I'll get up at some point. Waiting for the computer - sigh - still in the old days I couldn't edit at home at all and had to use the old tape to tape machines at work! Oh dear, I'm making myself seem very old! I'm not really, I just started young

Does anyone have a link to the parade lap video?
I haven't edited/converted/uploaded one for this year yet but I dare say I'll get round to it eventually. Got a few onboard camera laps to upload and a video of the Caterham action then I'll get to it.Until then will last years do?
