For when we're all huddled around in a circle of camping chairs, having pigged out on BBQ food, drunk too much beer and wine, and as the sun goes down, we have the ultimate petrolheads camping lamp. Just ordered one of these...

Apart from the effort to start it, which by the way i can't wait to see you try to do after a box of wine.
Which bloody lighthouse did you nick it from???

Having not been single for almost 10 years, I believe I would no longer possess the requisite technique to get that started!

strewth - 2mins of solid pumping?????

gimmie my 40 year old Tilley Lamp we picked up at a car boot for £5 - light meths. leave for 1-2mins when flame dies down, and give it 3-5 pumps, open valve as meth flame dies down to light the mantle, then give it a couple more pumps to increase the brightness... and it'll burn like that for an evening

heres the same bloke lighting a tilley: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfoOD1jUAMA Tho he does go rather overboard on the ol' pumping on that one too...

Tho - we do have the even easier lamp - screw onto gas bottle, turn on add flame.

As it happens your Lordship, I had problems placing an order for a Petromax, they were out of stock and only had a Chinese copy for £20. So I have ordered a Tilley with a brass bottom instead, and very pleased I have now, I should have done that in the first place. It's clearly a thing of heavy quality and British made too. I didn't realise that the Tilley was such an icon either.

All's well that ends well.

Are you going to bring your old Tilley? I understand that they are a collecters piece, an amazing amount of info on the old t'internet about them.

Tilley users unite

just remember with a tilley - best way to light it is to do very little.

best instructions: www.base-camp.co.uk/instruction.html

And the great thing is Tilley hasnt really changed the design of the lamp in nigh on 60/70 years - ours is limited run model from 1962-64 an X246a

and we have inherited my folk's 1975ish x246B

can still get all the parts for each as everything except the method of attaching the lamp legs to the tank hasnt changed.

aye, ours is (like alot of our camping gear) a hand-me-down which screws on to the bottle - which was great cos you could get screw top 0.25kg bottles now the smallest camping gaz bottle is the 0.45kg 901 bottle, which i havent found yet in the local supplier, so end up with the 2kg 904 bottle... still it lasts a good few seasons

so it looks some thing like this:

Gas is i'd say, more convienient than Tilleys, with ease of lighting, but theres something pleasurable about sitting reading with the hiss & Glow of the tilley going...

tho both tilly and gas lighters make great tent warmers too!

feck me size of that bottle, that will keep it going for days.

This is the same as the lamp I have. Uses the CV 270 230g bottles same as my camping stove, good for 6 hours use and easily portable

yeah, that was the problem, you used to be able to get little refillable bottles about the size of the disposables you get for your lamp.. but then they discontinued half the range - now you got to get these huge smeggers... Gas lasts on average around 2-3 seasons camping (and we camp more or less every other weekend with being away marshalling March - October!) so its not too bad on the ol' gas

could... just, might as well stay with the large bottle and it lasts longer. the plastic table it goes on is strong enough to hold it, and the wider base means its less likely to fall over
