2015 Race Against The Sun
Discussion
Hiya Ladies & Gents,
A few People have been talking about this on an old post from last year but, Me and My old Man sat down and had a chat about it and have decided to go ahead with it.
So, very early stages but bare with me!
The summer solstice is on Sunday 21st of June, therefor we can do the actual run Saturday into Sunday or Sunday into Monday.
To keep it a weekend event I think Saturday-Sunday would be a good shout as we would avoid the Monday morning rush on our way back home.
So, To keep it simple for now;
Sunset at Landsend is 21:37
We have 6:49 minutes to cover 437 miles, needing to average 65mph-ish as a quick guess.
That's not including fuel or lavatory stops we should be able to manage with just one stop for a tactical refuel, Wee Break and driver change which should only take 10 minutes.
Sunrise at Lowestoft is 4:26
So, I am Leaving from a Town near Brighton on Saturday aiming to get down there for mid afternoon maybe earlier to enjoy a few hours before the run itself.
If anyone is doing this/ wanting to participate please let me know!
so, My Dad put forward the idea of doing it as a charity event which to be honest is a great idea.
So, my idea to raise money for this event is for me & My dad(at the moment) to complete the 437 miles at £0.01 per mile totalling £4.37 (lets round it up £5.00) to then donate to a charity yet to be chosen. Anyone agree this is a good idea? even if it just totals £50, every little helps right!
I'll be Doing the run in my 2014 Fiesta ST, should be a good mix of comfort for the motorways and great fun with more than enough power to enjoy the smaller roads!
Please don't hesitate to Get in Touch!
Regards,
Tom

Without meaning to be a wet blanket, as soon as you put "race" or "timed" or an average speed (especially one as high as that) you will start to get plenty of attention from the BiB. They will know the start location/time and end location/time.
I assume that with an aim average of 65, its impossible to stick to the speed limit all the way.
Of course occasionally, some people do exceed the speed limit here and there, but to actually plan it is quite different.
Don't forget this is an open/public forum and there are many members who are in the police.

Especially as you've put a photo of your car on the forum with the plate visibleI assume that with an aim average of 65, its impossible to stick to the speed limit all the way.

You have made the same assumption that I made!
Although Lands End is the latest place in UK for the sun to rise, there is nothing special about Lowestoft.
Sunset at Cape Wrath is 2230ish and sunrise at Duncansby Head is 0405ish.
Google isochrones
Ever heard of isochrones? Me neither. The map below shows isochrones or lines linking places with the same times of sunrise (green lines) and sunset (red lines) for the United Kingdom for mid-June.
(from http://astro.ukho.gov.uk/nao/miscellanea/UK_SRSS/u...)
Instead of Lowestoft, try Dover. Lands End to Dover is 6.19 (fastest route on TomTom). Sunrise Lands End is 0510 approx, sunset Dover is 2110 approx. This makes it an 8 hour target at night.
A real challenge would be Lands End to Cape Wrath between 0515 and 2230. Latest sunrise to latest sunset.
I'll be doing something similar, but won't advertise for the reasons given by Party Pooper.

Hi Guys,
Cheers for the responses.
To be fair, we are not aiming to hide. about 75% of the journey is on Dual carriage way or motorways which, yeah its boring but we will need to get the average speed up by sticking to 70.
The rest of the roads will be pretty empty so sticking to speed limits wont be too bad.
So no, You're not being a wet blanket because it is a very valid point. So providing everyone behaves it should be a decent weekend.
If we're late, so what the journey would have been fun and worth it!
Meeting up with the guys this week to confirm details so as soon as I know I will post on here for you guys.

Nothing special about Lowestoft. Apart from it being the most Eastern point in the UK and therefore the opposite of Lands End.
If you're not going to pick the most Western and Eastern points why not just do you town, or London.
I was meaning relative to sunrise / sunset. If you're not going to pick the most Western and Eastern points why not just do you town, or London.
I'm doing a NEWS Run with a Sun Challenge later in the month, but it's the big GB one, so I know that Lowestoft is the most Easterly point in England, GB and UK.
I found out about the sunrise thing when I posted this...

Did you do it? I hope you did - life's about challenges .
We've just got back from a challenge that included a sun challenge ( http://www.zroadster.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&a...)
