Updated from 2010 for Sporting Bears Dream Rides at the NEC (11-13 November 2011)

(n.b. MPH Show Top Gear Live, this year, is next door and a ticket to that
also gets you into the NEC Classic Motor Show)

We need more sensible drivers and their cars - new and previous PHers are very welcome

thank you to those already booked in thumbup

For full information please use this link -
Sporting Bears Dream Rides - what's it all about

and for the necessary application form you will require please use this link – 2011 application

Sporting Bears Dream Rides

The Sporting Bears organise 10-mile passenger rides for charity at a few selected events such as the Classic Motor Show.

All the money received in donations for Sporting Bears Dream Rides goes to the nominated charities not a single penny raised is taken out by either the Sporting Bears or the Classic Motor Show.

The NEC Classic Motor Show (11-13 November 2011) is the best fund raising event for us to get money to the children’s charities we support.

We also need passengers!

In exchange for a donation to charity you can take a 10-mile ride as a passenger in one of the cars available out on the Queen’s highway, picking up and dropping off inside the show.

Selection board

This why we do it

For the many charities we have supported

There isn't a set route as such, as I think there are some legal issue if SB are telling you which route to take. Most of us do however use much the same route, which includes a fair bit of dual carriageway and open road.
Thanks for your reply and listing on PH Calendar

There's a suggested route that some use, others don't and another lot can't find, it doesn't matter as all have a good time, the suggested route is about 10 miles leaving the NEC complex and on HM highways

A country road rote was discovered last year suitable for the smaller cars

Nigel - for some reason the PH calendar isn't working for me, so I can't show my support, however, I'll be there on Saturday, preying for good weather smile
Cheers Mark, damn computers

yes you do rather have to rely on sola heating

Regardin routes, I've worked out a 15miler, which heads south via Stonebridge an returns thru' Catherine-de-Barns... should be a bit different to previous runs wink
The country route (another) Mark discovered last year could be a bit muddy for you but for those that needed or wanted more curves and bends it was good

15 miles is very good value, I'll have to have a look at it

I understand the need for some to change routes smile

Going to be there on the Sunday and looking to get my dad a passenger ride in something exciting and roofless!
I'm sure he'll have a good choice perhaps Robert will return this year with his 1932 Lagonda but he is 81 or 82 (Robert not the car) and the Lagonda is a big heavy car, last year was the first year he missed that I can remember

Sorry there's not a list of cars until each day as there is no way of guaranteeing what will be available, nothing is booked each day until the car and driver have registered and able to run – cars can be no-shows or become unavailable for many reasons

All drivers and helpers are totally unpaid volunteers with all but a very few of the cars privately owned by the driver

SBDR at NEC photos

2008 photos

SBDRs are fixed donations per car (whether 1 passenger seat or 3) and normally start at £10 rising to £70 depending on the car

SBDRs are around 10 miles (and more depending on how lost some get) going outside the NEC complex on the Queen's highway

To see what’s available go to the selection Board(s) make a note of the number of the car you want (also noting price, number of passengers, children or not) and ask at the booking desks about the availability

Selection board

You can book for whatever times the car is available that day – I suggest taking the earliest slot you can that way if you really enjoy it you can book other cars on your return, many passengers do, we have passengers who come back each year and even each day of the show

We cannot allow SBDRs to any children under the age of 6 as we do not have suitable seating available - any child between the age of 6 and 12 and under the height of 135 cm will have to use the approved booster seats provided by the club – drivers have the choice to accept children in their car or not

Last year we gave 1,012 people a Sporting Bears Dream Ride and over the three days raised over £30,000 with between 60-90 cars each day and total of 119 different cars over the event

Friday we tend to have fewer cars, a few more are classics and we are not as busy as the show is less crowded, it’s the day I recommend

The weekend we have more cars and more supercars and exotics at times we can get extremely busy

See my original post for more details and links to full details

Hi Nigel,

I may be able to make the Friday if you can use my Celica? It's more fun now - it weights 1300kg without people and puts out 400BHP smile

It is in the bodyshop at the moment, but should be ready in time.

Adam
Great stuff Adam you had satisfied 'customers' at Brunters

And if you could add your name to the PH Calendar - http://www.pistonheads.com/calendar/event.asp?i=21...

Advice on adding your name to Calendar event list

Mr Will said:
They must be logged in to PistonHeads first to add themselves to the calendar, and they might be having problems if they are logged in to a different version of PH to the link you are sending them (www.pistonheads.co.uk rather than www.pistonheads.com or vice versa).

There are no bugs that I am aware of, so check the suggestion above and if that doesn't fix it then can you tell me a bit more about exactly what is happening and I'll look into it.

I think it's a case of whether you've got PH.com or PH.co.uk save in your 'Favorites' (which I think is also a BookmarK?????!!)

You know these computer types they love to made things complicated it keeps them in a job smile

Do you have to buy a ticket to the show to take part in this?
Not if you register and are accepted (idiot drivers need not apply) see the OP and all the links from it and the links on the links, all info should be there

Once you know all fill in the Driver's Forms and send them to Kim and attempt the PH calendar

Sporting Bears just ask that you do a minmum of 4 rides a day, thrill the passengers not frighten them, enjoy yourself and make it enjoyable for everyone else

Any questions just ask, there's me and a lot of other old hands here to answer
