Have A Super Supercar Family Funday At Dunsfold
Dad's Day Out is back, but with a new name
The fast car-tastic Supercar Family Funday (previously known as the Dad's Day Out) returns on 14th May for its 3rd year - and for 2011 it's going to be even bigger and better than ever.
The Supercar Family Funday (held at Dunsfold Park, AKA the Top Gear test track) is a fantastic event in aid of The Children's Trust charity in Tadworth and has been co-organised by our friends over at Petrolhead Nirvana in association with Club Scuderia.
The main attraction of the day will be more than 100 supercars available for passenger rides around the airfield in exchange for a donation to the charity. You'll get a chance for a ride in a huge variety of exotic metal, from Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, Dodge Vipers and Nissan GTRs to Ariel Atoms and KTM X-Bows.
In addition to the main attraction there are also plenty of other things to keep you and yours occupied:
The Caterham Club will be demonstrating their car control in the shape of donuts and drifting, and will be taking any passengers who are brave enough.
There'll be a chance for kids from 10 upwards to take their first driving lesson in a dual-control car next to a trained instructor, courtesy of the guys from M-B World at Brooklands.
We've also got spectacular stunts from East Coast FMX display team M.A.D. - the UK's number one mountain bike stunt & display team.
There'll be loads more stuff to keep adults and kids of all ages occupied too, including helicopter, hovercraft and fire engine rides, a 'Kids Zone' marquee, slot car racing and even live music - you can find a full list of what's going on at The Children's Trust's website.
Think of it as a PistonHeads Sunday Service with a difference, as not only will you find a huge private parking area reserved for PHers, but you'll also have a great day out while doing your bit for 'charidee'.
For the general public there is a large parking area and advance entry costs are £7 per adult and £3 per child. But PHers will receive the same special discounted entry offer as last year. That means £7 per car instead of £7 per person and once again there will be a special parking area nearer to the action - with space for up to 500 cars. To book your place for that click here:
As an added extra, we're also giving away free rides and entry tickets for five lucky PHers. The winners will get one entry ticket and one free ride in either a supercar or a Caterham (lucky dip).
For a chance to win, send us an e-mail to competitions@pistonheads.com with the subject line 'Supercar Family Funday', not forgetting to include a contact number. The competition closes at midday on Friday 19th April and we'll be drawing the winners out of the PH virtual Homburg and notifying the lucky winners within 24 hours. Good luck!
For the event itself, gates open to the public from 8.30am and the event starts at 9.00am. The first rides on the circuit will start at 9.00am and will run until 4.30pm (but no later due to noise restrictions at the airfield), so make sure you arrive early.
In order to book rides and other attractions in advance you'll need to follow this link.
Please try to book your rides in advance as there's a limited number and they are likely to be sold out way before the event as it will be advertised in the national and local press, so book early!
Here are a couple of videos to whet your appetite:
As Pete said, officially the list for this year is now full however there is a reserve list running and although we can't guarantee a drive there is always a chance if others drop out...which can happen anytime right up to the day itself.
We have had over 300 requests for 120 spaces this year although the reserve list is currently 20 cars long
Just a quick question...do you get to pick the car you have a ride in or is it randomly allocated?
Thanks,
Tom
The blue ribbon cars, Enzo's etc are chosen by you
with the proviso that although these cars have promised themselves on the day, because some of them are rare we can only be sure they will come when they turn up on the day as they may be sold, or break down anytime between now and then.
The last couple of years we've had very few drop out but you never know
The standard cars are things like the 360, 430, gallardo, viper GT3 etc
The Blue ribbon cars are (with more confirming as we go)
Enzo
Mosler
F40 (4 so far)
F50
Carrera GT
SLS
McLaren MP4 12C (subject to delivery in time)
458
Murcielago (and Roadster)
X-Bow
Atom
Ultima
Spyker
We are also working on the following but they are not confirmed as yet.
Zonda
Caparo
Ginetta F400
SLR
My daughter loved her ride last year in a viper but complained there was no one there to collect her afterwards as my wife and I were also on track at the same time
Lesson learnt for this year
The other thing is that with the number sre are expecting it would take longer to get in if you wanted to buy tickets on the gate and the rides are likely to be sold out...given the speed at which they are currently selling i would say that is pretty much a certainty.

Now, I appreciate the people are volunteers, and it's for charity, so I'm not really have a serious go. But it was hardly the slickest operation to get people into cars. I paid for 2 Blue Ribbon cars. But as it took an hour to queue up we ended up taking 1 BR and 1 "normal" (if a F430 Scud is Normal) simply because by the second time round most of the BR cars had either stopped running or gone home. So IMO you need MORE cars than last year. And less of the unpopular ones. Crossbows and Atoms were sitting around because they just don't have the appeal to non car people as a F430 or a F40 does. But everyone was being pushed to get into 1 to try and reduce the queue. Which understandably people were reluctant to do.
At our debrief immediately after the event that was one of the key points we raised.
That's why this year....
We have 20 more cars than last year, some of whom are in shifts (morning and afternoon) in order to ensure that there are enough cars all day long to satisfy demand. We can't really have any more as we have limited space to 'stack' them and also it's unfair for a driver to give up their whole day for just one or two runs
Key volunteers have been selected (i.e. those with a good knowledge of the cars etc) in order to make the queuing operation slicker - part of the problem was that although we had allocated times on the tickets some people ignored them and tried to get on early which made the queues longer than they should have been - something we are dealing with this year. so the queuing will be better this year.
Blue Ribbon cars are difficult to quantify and of course not as easy to source. There are only so many CGTs F40s Enzos, Murcielagos, Spykers etc vs the number of Gallardos, 360s and 430s. We do have more than last year - assuming they all turn up - The Atom/X-bow debate is an interesting one as they offer a more thrilling ride but are niche in their appeal - my Atom (although rarely driven by me on the day because i was busy organising) hardly stopped all day and I know the X-bows we also very busy (taken from the numbers after the event) so the demand is there which is why they are back again this year.
We have also tried to broaden the appeal by inviting a few other marques, drawn from clubs who have supported the event in the last two years - only a few so we can gauge their popularity this year whilst still trying to make sure everyone gets their money's worth. We would love to have more but as Pete said above it's a very difficult balancing act with public appeal, fundraising and ensuring that the event is equivocal to it's supporters.
It's still a young event at Dunsfold (started in 2009 - previously it was a small low key event at the trust itself) and we are getting better every year I really want to involve as many people/car clubs as possible not just to make the event better but so everyone can have a hand in raising money for the charity and enjoying themselves at the same time.
Also did i say there were no TVR's driving?...I've not released the full Petrolhead Nirvana list as yet ...none in Blue Ribbon admittedly for the reasons that Rich outlined above.
The day won't be cancelled..However it's important to state, the tickets you buy are to be a passenger in the cars not drive them.
The process is as follows..
you buy your general entry ticket to give you access to the event and at the same time a ride ticket (you have the choice of different tickets - helicopter rides, caterham drift/donut rides, normal supercar rides (where you don't get to choose the car and just take the next one in line) blue ribbon rides (where you do get a choice of cars).
it's important you note the time printed on your downloaded tickets and aim to arrive at the rides area at least 10 mins before that.
I suggest everyone get there early anyway as there's lots to see and do at the event.
all help gratefully received,
email me through my profile and we can take it from there
Thanks very much for the offer
The tickets we used were the same as those for the display area hence saying you need to be there at 8.30am
one thing i would say though the earlier you arrive the less traffic you will hit and the mre chance of getting a ride in something unless you've booked in advance (which is advisable anyway)
Schmee, with a display ticket you have the option of the AM display of the PH car park....totally up to you mate
If you look closely you will see a TVR at the start of the parade lap...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ew2yeAlinc0
....did you spot it? That's right it was parked trackside with the bonnet up
so if you don't buy one today you'll have to pay the full entry fee
I've also just noticed that the car club ticket doesn't mention PH anywhere, I assume that won't be a problem when it comes to getting in/parking?
