Cholmondeley Pageant Of Power In Pictures

Didn't we have a lovely time, the day we went to CPoP...

A rain-spattered weekend didn't put a dampener on proceedings for the fourth Cholmondeley Pageant of Power last weekend, with a healthy variety of machinery hooning its way around the U-shaped track in deepest Cheshire - and here are some of the photos to prove it.

CPoP has been consistently raising its profile over the past few years and now seemingly has staked a claim to being the 'sort of motoring event that the Festival of Speed was when it first started'.

So we decided to make a trip from the PHHQ up the M6 to test that out. There's certainly a 'village fete' feel to CPoP that makes it thoroughly endearing and, while it may still not be attracting the crowds of the FoS, it still gets its fair share of interesting machinery (not to mention boats) and you can get a heck of a lot closer to the action than you can at the FoS.

The need to set a fast time on the 1.2-mile sprint course is also pretty significant. Last year Nick Faulkner threw down the gauntlet with a time of 62.68secs in a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera.

This year he was fast enough to defeat the opposition once again, but not fast enough to beat his own record, though he did fend off some pretty feisty challenges, not least those of rally driver (and dab-of-oppo hero) Mark Higgins in a Subaru Impreza Cosworth, and the fearsomely fast Ariel Atom V8, driven by Autocar road test editor Matt Prior.

Our personal favourites? The flame-spitting 42-litre Packard Bentley, with torpedo oil tanks and a driving position offset to help accommodate the massive engine block was pretty awesome.

Then again the Rothmans 911 rally car was flung with impressive abandon around the course. Oh, and the AC Works Le Mans Coupe was pretty lovely... and we were fascinated by the 400hp Audi 80 racer that won the 1991 French touring car championship (and in '92 and '93 as well)... but we'll stop now and just let you enjoy the pictures...

Firstly, I am one of the winners of paddock tickets to CPoP 2011 but I say without Bias that this event was truly awesome. You didnt know which way to look next there was so much going on. Very well organised and run, something for everyone. Paddock was really friendly and the general atmosphere of the whole event was like a watching the cars/bikes/planes/boats/tanks/helicopters and everything else with your best friends.

I highly recommend this event to any motorsport fan.

I took my father who remembers seeing some of the vehicles at a British GP @ Aintree...tells you how old he is

and my 8yr old son, who is now in love with the MP4-12C after thinking it was better looking than the Veyron he previously loved...although neither stacked up to the Tank Ride he took!

Personally I loved seeing some of my all-time favourite cars in action rather than on a plinth!
and then getting up close and personal with them in the paddock.

If you are interested he are a few of my photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stigthegeek/

Nice photos - but hardly the whole CPOP in pictures. Where are the boats ? the aircraft ? the rally section ? the military display ? the car clubs ? the electric vehicles ? etc.

It really was a huge (though definitely moist) event and well worth the entrance fee, especially for those who got discounts through the clubs and PH.

I am trying to work out if getting more Names/Celebs & Manufacturers like goodwood would spoil this event

Celebs would wreck it, they'd start demanding that some sections are closed off. If more celebs are admitted they should be the high-octane variety only (no "brand ambassadors" unless they're going to tackle the hill).

Manufacturers could improve it if carefully managed.

(all IMNSHO of course)

I've never been to the FOS, but from what I understand the CPoP is how the FOS used to be ? so getting in to the CPoP isn't too much of a problem and actually being able to get to see the cars, bikes etc isn't a problem either ?

Not sure how my post got marked as Advert, as it definitely isnt.

Genuine question.

I guess it is the same with all events; once they get too commercial they lose there appeal.

I hope they dont let this happen to CPoP as it was a great event!

marshalla if you check a few more of the sets in my photo stream; you will see a couple of bikes, loads of cars and loads of the military display, which my 8yr old was amazed with.

As I said so much going on, I didnt get a chance to get over to Rally Stage, which I am gutted about as they had Group B Rally cars doing what they do best.

Sorry - I meant the PH photos - yours give a much better "feel" of what was going on all over the estate. Good work & thanks for sharing them.

Those photos are here http://www.lawrencecliftphotography.co.uk/90100/in...

Riggers, where did you lift the images from please? The reason for asking is that the majority of the images that you have used for your report are mine, a credit wouldn't go amiss please wink

Great stuff, glad you enjoyed (I'd be surprised if you didn't)

Although CPoP gives the activity a few mentions our good friends at PH seem to have forgotten us frown
