Oil advice and recommendations here!
Discussion
I've got a 2.8 V6 Cologne engine in a kit car. Engine originally manufactured December 1985 for a Scorpio automatic. Checked the bores when I first got the engine - no wear.Changed the oil pump and the valves - still running on leaded fuel (unleaded plus additive). Initially I used Duckham's Q 15W/40 and oil pressure was great (approx 50 psi) until the car had done a long motorway run when it dropped very low (oil light flickering and less than 10 psi indicated) on idle. A change to Comma 20W/50 hasn't seen any real difference.
Tried to stick with mineral oils as per lots of advice but it seems from reading this thread that I could just as well use a full or semi-synthetic. Any advice?
The car is used for fast road use.
Cheers

Top advise on this thread, hope the man in the know is still checking?
Anyhow, I've got an Audi S3 that has had it's engine replaced less than 3,000 miles ago, new turbo the lot and I was always using Castro SLX as recommended before the engine went. but I have noticed when the oil was changed after about 1,500 miles the Tuning company has put in Synta Gold 5W/40 according to the bill (Is this a VAG group oil?).
What would you recommend, for road use and ocassional very fast and daft road use.
Thanks for any help.

Robin,
The V6 will be happy on synthetic, in fact if the engine is now in a kit car and gets used hard then moving to a syntheitc could be a good idea.
I would suggest an oil like the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 ester/pao syntheitcs as a top option, due to the shear stability of the oil you should find that the pressure remains consitant, the mineral based oils will drop out of grade when very hot and under hard use, so what was a 15w-40 to start with could be a 15w-30 or lowever once it begins to shear down.
Plenty of tech data on synthetics here www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm
Hope this helps.

Hi,
What year is your S3?
And is it on fixed or variable servicing?

Hi Guy,
It's a 2000 - engine code APY 210BHP version
Fixed 10,000 mile service intervals, although after the engine change I think I will be trying to get the oil changed every 5k, just looking for what would be best, and a recommendation if possible?

Ok,
You are going to need an oil that meets the VW503.01 spec, this will be 0w-30/0w-40.
Brand wise, if you want the best then I would look at the Motul 8100 0w-40 as this is a pao/ester based oil which puts in the top quality bracket.
Next up I would look at the Fuchs titan supersyn sl 0w-30.

I've just purchased a load of 0-40 mobil 1 to put in my 993TT in the Autumn instead of the 15-50.
I also run a
vivaro 1.9 tdi (03 plate) (100bhp)
megane 1.5tdi (53 plate)(100bhp)
Would Mobil 1 be suitable for these also?
Briggs & stratton tractor / mower 1990 (13bhp) with 2500 hours on the clock - currently on mobil 1 15-50

Hi,
The Mobil 1 0w-40 is ideal for the Megane tdi, you may even find an increase in fuel consumption with it.
Who makes the Vivaro? not familiar with that one.
The mower, well not many poeple I know put Mobil 1 motorsport in the mower, but it will do no harm at all, in fact it probably loves it.

I would not suggest a full synthetic till the rebuild is complete. When you have rebuilt the engine run back in on a thick mineral oil, a good quality oil, then after 1000 miles or so drain and move to a full synthetic.
Not only would a full synthetic benefit the engine but the gear box is fed by the same oil so a good shear stable oil would help with the loads on the gear teeth.

Do not use fully or semi synthetic oils in minis as i found out i had a brand new jack knight straight cut gear box which failed arfter 2000 miles this was then sent back to manafactuer who would not replace due to the use of the wrong sort of oil.

Volvo V70 AWD 2.5 turbo, 106k what do you suggest??
cheers
Mojo.
Mojo,
You have some options.
As a cost option you are looking at a 10w-40 semi synthetic changed every 5-6k or so.
As a quality option a good 5w-40 true synthetic changed every 10k or so.
Volvo dont tend to approve oils so an up to date god brand oil is ideal.
Hope this helps.

Granted,
The gearboxes can be fussy and straight pao synthetic oils cause what you happened to you, however the gearboxes do like ester, so an ester based oil such as the Silkolene Pro R 15w-50 is ideal and well proven in the mini.
But on the whole you are right, be carefull with synthetics in the mini.
