Compact drivetrain challenge...
Discussion
Right, im after a few suggestions to suitable engine/gearboxes (transverse, preferably with cable gear shift mechanisms to fit in a tiny space:
height 600mm, depth 420mm and width 800mm
any ideas?? It needs to be very narrow, im thinking a 4age is a possible?
All suggestions welcome, even more so if you have some approximate dimensions?

bike engine?
how much power / torque do you need?

No bike engines, need reliable and everyday useable power curves, nothing that revs round to 16k thanks! how much power / torque do you need?

As for power, anything north of 120bhp/similar torque will be a useful step up... but it'll have to also be less than 230bhp for traction/stability issues.

He said he wanted reliable lol...Still, I wouldnt overlook bike engines. What about a Goldwing engine ? Suzuki make a 1400cc bike too ( dont recall the name, but a friend has one ).
There are big cc bike engines out there that would have a fair amount of torque, and be far far more compact than any car engine/box combo will ever be.
Its everyday driveable I want ideally... a BEC is just too much work in traffic or at low speeds, and im not convinced of the clutch life.
I just need some very compact engine/gearbox ideas really, then I'll start comparing figures, making choices, buying up and building a custom subframe...

Why not look at some of the lower revving (about 8-9k), torquey bike engines, (BMW, Pan Euro, XJR for instance)anything from a touring bike that's large cc with low end torque, you could also supercharge it for even more low end grunt.
As for the clutch, some bikes are now used for vehicle recovery!!
My zzr1200 is still on it's first clutch at 80,000 miles.

Look at some of the Suzuki/Daihatsu variants, 16v turbo 1.0 - 1.3L 100bhp/L outputs, all alloy blocks. Tiny little lumps, reliable & tuneable
CB80 3pot DOHC 12valve turbo.
A standard engine with downpipe, exhaust and air filter will easily see 120hp.
130hp if you raise boost to 12psi or so. Forged internals and fat rods as standard.
Put a decent mappable ecu on there, enlarge the throttle body, decent i/c, hybrid turbo running 18psi, bored out throttle body and your talking over 180 horses.
