Just question. Spoke to brother earlier as his VW LT LWB 135 went in to the dealer for a replacement turbo (60K mile 03 Plate)..

Anyway they got back saying the turbo had broken however parts had been sucked into the engine and "bent the pistons" and it required a new head and pistons at £3K which they had ordered.

I'm not too up on turbo systems but thought that the intercooler sat between the turbo and intake manifold (and would have caught any pieces large enough to "bent a piston") like a filter (well, a pretty crap one anyway)?

Not trying to say excessive/unessasary work being carried out, but just wanting to clarify location of the intercooler, as always thought it was post compression where the hot air needed cooling and not before...

Thanks in advance.

Hi there

Order is generally...
Air intake
Turbo compressor
Intercooler (may or may not have one)
Throttle bodies
Intake valves
Pistons

I'd find it hard to believe the turbo had 'sucked in' something. Its usually seals or the exhaust side which goes and that just blows smoke and/or bits out the exhaust. The only thing on the intake side would be the compressor fins (which I have never heard of failing) and these would be stopped by an intercooler if there is one. Anything small enough to make it through the intercooler and intake valves and into the engine would (IMHO) be unlikely to cause catastrophic failure / bent conrods.

I once lost a cork up the intake (don't ask) and it simply lodged in the intake runner so I would be asking for a full diagnosis before forking over £3k

Sounds like someone is ripping you off TBH. I would most definately be asking to see all of the old damaged parts.
