VW engine trans half breed
Discussion
Hi Guys,
First post here so go easy on me!
In simple terms I want to mate an earlyish golf engine to a passat/audi transaxle gearbox. Will it work?
I found this... https://store.034motorsport.com/adapter-plate-vr6-...
Will that help?? Wondering if anyone by chance has groped around with the 2 and knew weather they'd match up at all??
I want to rebuild a Citroen HY van with more updated running gear. It's longitudinal engine and transaxle setup doesn't allow for many engine/gearbox options that I'm comfortable with. I have swapped VW engines on my Mk1 Golf so very familiar with ignition and fueling of mk1s and 2s. Hence why I want to stick with what I know rather than scare myself rigid trying to wire in something more modern like a TDI.
Another obvious option would be an early 1.8 8v OHC passat engine - i'm just finding it hard to work out if these ones had transaxle setup and the simpler ignition and fueling like the mk2 golfs. I suppose I could even use the fueling and ignition off the golf and put that on the passat lump/box...
Basically any of you VAG heads got any ideas of a simple route using VAG parts and the early ICM ignition & carbs to create a longitudinal engine/trans axle setup.

VW Group use one main bellhousing pattern for both longitudinal and transverse engines so you'd be hard pushed to bugger it up.
Maybe stuff like the W12 or 3 cyl and V12 TDI are different, I couldn't tell you.
But the common stuff is all the same.
I remeber reading that the PSA XU engine will also line up except one or two bolt holes.

Thanks for the info guys.
I would be interested if I could piece a plan together.
With the Mk1/2/3 Golfs/Polos the ignition is just so simple to sort using the ICM from the mk2/3 golfs or polos with the 3 wire loom. Then you have many carb options too to sort fueling.
Jumping onto a newer engine stuff such as later audis i'm worried that that all goes out the window and I end up with an ECU and sensors galore.
Cross referencing the AZZ 1.9TD engine was mounted Trans and Longitudinal for Golfs & Audis so works with both gearbox types. Figures then that if I used a trans gearbox from a AZZ setup most golf engines should fit of equivalent era.
