Better than axle stands but not enough room for a Bradbury ?

for underneath work at home, is there a better alternative to axle stands ? Maybe something that gets the car higher and is a little more secure ? I can see pairs of ramps for sale but firstly you need the wheels on for them and secondly they don't look like they get the car any higher ? They also block access down the sides of the car.
