Gurmeet suggested Flensburg for the way up and the return journeys, but no one else has booked the return yet. It would be a good place to stop on the drive back. Are we all happy with this?
I'm ok with Flenburg on the way back, however the Mrs hinted she might be want to come out to Stockholm on the 5th, birthday, anniversary stuff. I can easily book then cancel depending on what she decides gsd2000 said:
i personally think that we need to head further south and aim for hamburg at least.
There was a fair bit of traffic last year around hamburg and it also depends on what time the return crossing is
I'm happy to learn from those that have been before, but it does seem sensible to me to get as much of the drive back done on the first day as comfortably possible to give us an easier second leg and room to manoeuvre if trains/ferries across the channel are delayed etc. There was a fair bit of traffic last year around hamburg and it also depends on what time the return crossing is
Vasteras to Flensburg is 589 miles/9:10
Flensburg to Dunkirk is 543 miles/8:15
Hamburg is another 100 miles/1:47 further south of Flensburg
Bremen is another 166 miles/2:30 further south of Flensburg. (this was our stopover on the way back last year)
A lot will depend on ferry times and if you are driving home on the following day, or planning to continue on the same day.
The Harwich option uses overnight crossings so easier for timings.

TBH, whilst that hotel in Bremen was excellent, getting in and out of it was another matter. Road conditions were probably down to one Bomber Harris and his mates when they gave it a good going over a while back.
(I just love exploding the myth of German superiority. Most of the roads are just as rubbish as over here, e.g Hamburg!)

I think Bremen would be a good stop on the return leg, its a long first day for the return leg, but it pays off when heading to the tunnel/ferry(I just love exploding the myth of German superiority. Most of the roads are just as rubbish as over here, e.g Hamburg!)

I will meet you guys in Flensburg on Tuesday night. I assume you have booked the des Nordens hotel?
ETA. I'm doing ferries as each time we have been let down by the Chunnel. So Ive booked the DFDS from Dunkirk to Dover on the way back. Same time as last trip.
