TVR Warranties / Tapping Noise - Sagaris
Discussion
Has anyone heard anything about TVR warranties? Our 55 plate Sagaris is in the garage (again!!) this time with a slight tapping noise, which according to the garage may be the oil chain or pump. Repairs have been quoted in the region of £3K so hoping warranties are coming back soon!! Has anyone had a similar tapping problem and if so was it what oil chain/pump??

It's all still up in the air! Awaiting developments to find out if I need to stump up for a new engine in my 06 Tamora, or if Mssrs Smelly and Oxley will stump up as they are promising.
Humph.

Continuing problem with the valve clearances closing up. According to Martin at RG this means something somewhere is stretching.... So it hasn't gone bang yet, and at the 18k service they adjusted the clearances (for the second time) but they reckon there's only about another 6k left before there will be no adjustment left.
Which will require a strip down and rebuild. Apparently this is a bit strange, but then so is my life..
Ho-hum....

Lee,
You suggest its a continuing problem with valve clearances?
Stretching valves is/was a known problem on the S6, its not uncommon, and I'm very suprised the diagnosis was not made earlier by RG......... when warranty was not an issue. I'd bung it back for RG to sort - at their cost, before the bill is any bigger. You bought from them, its their problem and your post would suggest its been an ongoing problem - one they failed to resolve in a timely manner.

what are the symptoms of this valve clearance problems, iv just hit 22k miles, !! woohoo and she's fine, but im watching her like a hawk for signs of problems before they do become major
I had the same issue with my previous Tuscan 2000 model at around 18K miles, symptoms were engine stalling on tickover and misfiring at 4-5 K RPM, the engine also used quiet a bit of oil (700 miles/litre), but that was more due to the valve guides also being worn.
By continuing, I mean that the problem first presented itself at about 15k miles. All was fine at the 12k service, valves adjusted but nothing unexpected.
At 15k it started running rough, lack of power, struggling at low revs. Popped it in where RG spotted the problem and adjusted the valves. At the 18k service, they've closed up again. So once again adjusted.
I had three services where nothing untoward showed; problems only started 3k miles and 2 months ago so we were already into the problem period. IMO RG have treated me fairly; they could of course have been lying through their back teeth but that isn't the feeling that I get and Martin genuinely seemed surprised at the appearance of the problem.
Of course, I could be wrong.....

BTW John,
It's interesting (if that's the right word) that it used to be a known problem with the S6 engine. Not knowing anything about engineering would this be because there is a problem with the valve material, causing it to stretch, or some other area?
I ask because I'm talking to RG about their new upgraded engine components and I don't think that they are changing the valves in that way.

The valves stems were consdiered too slender by those who are supposed to know. Consequently some of the afetermarket upgrades to the heads do have larger diameter stems which would prevent this streching. Valves stretching is quite a novel concept to me, but it appears it was/is? a real one.
Sorry for not getting back earlier, I've been playing all weekend with the Saga Lout.

No worries John. Engine prognosis not withstanding, we've been out with the Tamora all weekend.
Interesting about the valve stems, as Colin at RG says that they are making a concious decision NOT to increase the width like some other guys. RG have spoken to the valve manufacturers who are adamant that this modification is unecessary.
BUT...maybe I'll have a chat with them about this. I'll certainly be having some sort of upgrade along with the rebuild, and if it's done under warranty (oink-oink, what's that flying past.....) it will be with RG and their upgrades. However, this is something else to factor in.
I doubt it's valve stretch - more likely the valves seats are wearing/receding into the head (therefore making the shim too big for the reducing gap).
Sorry Daftlad but this isn't something RG should have spotted/diagnosed earlier - valve clearances have a mind of their own in Speed Six engines (the 12K interval recommended by TVR is hopeful at best). Rattly valve gear can't automatically imply valve seat/head problems (although it can help cause it). Tight valves tend to imply a valve seat problem but it's not necessarily always the case either.
