Was out for a quiet drive today… Oh Ok I was racing a Porsche c4 , afterwards I noticed a knocking sound coming from the engine around 3-4000 rpm.

By the time I got home the knocking has become seriously loud and is coming directly from the engine area, checked the oil - fine …. I fear the worst .

Anyone have ideas what it could be… maybe a loose screw?

PS... the Porsche limped home with smoke pouring out of his exhaust.

Steve, sorry to hear that, get it down to the dealer for a diagnosis ASAP, hope it's not too serious, I guess at least the Porker didn't get away unscathed!

Are you covered with a warranty for the engine?

Oh POO.

What was the problem in the end Mr F?

Got the car booked in with Dream Machines tomorrow (still under warranty).

Mileage currently at £16k running perfectly yesterday.

I will keep you all updated.

Sadly I fear that you may be correct - sounds like a big end/main bearing. That's a low mileage though so it's worth asking why they thought that it went. Oil pressure OK and not too thick?

12k and top end for me... Took it to Power, it had 3 months left on the warrenty, Phew... Still cost me £5.5k though in the end...

As a side note all three speed six's I have had I would say that looking back there were signs 250 miles before. If you can imagine an old ford car and one of the tappets is out of adjustment, you will notice a very small ticking on one bank, very very quite ticking if you listen really hard. This is the first sign of the cam wear, and in the case of the Speed 6, head off and reworked. Unfortunatly, even shimming the tappets doesnt always catch this in time, as the tick tick tick tick is the dammage already done to the lobes on the cams.

I once had a knocking inside the engine, which was really quite loud, which turned out to be the timing chain bearings that needed changing. No head off or anything, just the front cover off the engine, but, you guessed it, the only way to get this off is to have the engine out...ho hum...

The speed six seems to have quite a strong bottom end, not too sure on the top tho' ...

Mr F.

How come it cosy you £5.5k then? Was this 'optional extras'?

Yes, the engine was out, so it had some 'felting'. I was going to get a Sagaris, but it would be slower now that my T350 now.

Out of interest do you know what the cost would have been, assuming you'd paid and assuming no extra upgrades were carried out.
Oh and BTW what upgrades did you have done

I reckon £2k. £500 for the cams and follower £132 for head gasket, £50 for sundries (nutts) £75 for oil and filter. Rest is labour 12-14 hours @ £48 per hour. Just a rough estimate...

I had a complete engine rebuild with all new components, Pistons, rings, crank, rods, valves, injectors, head skimmed. As the head was off and the head was having new components, I had the engine blue printed, balanced etc etc from scratch. The list is nearly 2 pages long on the invoice.

Going to get it dyno'd when it is run in, but I would reckon on 415 bhp based on the Tuscan S performace figures of 405 from the Saggyarse.

Well, James at Dream Machines has confirmed its terminal (no specific details yet) so it looks like the engine will be taking a trip to Blackpool.

Could take up to 2 months

All this talk of upgrades has got me thinking (Damn you Mr F ) does the Factory in Blackpool do upgrades?

Awful news. Keep us posted on progress. It will be useful to hear how you are treated by the factory etc.

Is it under warranty?

That's really bad news Steve - a sharp intake of breath is going round all the speed Six community!

From when does your engine date? I'm asking this because it might make me rethink my plans on upgrades vs. new car + warranty, and I'm sure I'm not alone with those thoughts!

You have my sympathies....

Indeed, if we ever get out of this reccession intact (hit and miss for me at the mo! ), I shall certainly look into getting a new one, or at least one with the new warranty.

I think we're trying to claim from TVR, but I also have a separate Warranty with DM's (Carplan) which covers major mechanical faults up to £2k.

Does anyone know if I will get a 3 warranty from TVR for the engine after the rebuild?
