Ok, I've got to fill in the next 7 weeks somehow so let's start here. What is the official running in procedure? Tony at Hexham tells me 3k to 1000 miles and then 1k extra for each 1000 miles. Is that about right? That means 7k miles before I can use warp factor 5! Probably a good thing as this my first TVR.

Second question, what's the quality of the owner's handbook like, assuming there is one?

Been some conflicting advice on this. The handbook says 1000 miles but taking it easy for the first 2000. (not using full open throttle and building the revs gradually) The advise from some dealers is as you say, over the first 6000 miles, 1000 revs for every 1000 miles.

Talking to an engineer and pre war car buff friend of mine (he's actually a Doctor of Engineering so he should know a thing or two.) He favors the method in the handbook as it avoids steps in the cylinder wall and thinks the 6000 mile option a little over cautious.

All this is fine and I guess either is OK but the 6000 mile option does seem a little dull.

Oil type changes at the 1000 and 6000 mile service so that does indicate something.

The handbook is OK, easy to follow with only a few errors. Anyone managed to get 63 liters of fuel in a Tamora I think its only 53.

6000 seams mover cautious, follow the handbook upto 1000miles and build upto full revs by 2500-3000 just being aware they will get better with miles. My Tuscan still seamed to be improving at 18,000.

If you read the handbook it actually says that you should not exceed 3000rpm for the first 250 miles and then should gradually increase power until max revs are achieved. Obviously only when the engine is warm.
On the advice of my dealer and other Tamora owners I roughly added 1000rpm for each 100-150 miles so that after the 1000 mile service I could use full power.
12000 miles on and the engine's superb so would recommend this method.

I agree with Andrew, my dealer gave me the all clear to use the whole rev range when warm after the 1st 1000 miles. I think those 1st 1000 miles are the all important ones for bedding in.

The thousand rpm per thousand miles is only a rough 'rule of thumb' guide that we tend to use following discussions with John Ravenscroft a few years ago. We tend to suggest this as most people can take a very literal view that once the first thousand miles are completed then the running in period is over and think it is ok to give it the full 8,000 rpm!
The point we are trying to get over is that the car will not be fully run in probably until about 6k miles and also 'running your driving ability in' in conjunction with this is not a bad idea!!
Don't forget that your dealer can now 'interrogate' the ecu with their laptop to see how kind you've been. Logged are many maximiums including engine speed, road speed, temperature, oil pressure, etc.

I didn't doubt you for a moment Tony (!) but I thought it would be interesting to get everyone's views as the prospect of having to do 7000 miles before being able to get the full adrenalin rush was beginning to worry me. I'm not sure I have that level of patience! I do, however, think moderation will be good for me and the car!

p.s. A bit concerned over reliability (see flasher's thread elswhere) but a good PDI should help!!

Interrogated ECU! now that could be scary in the wrong hands I wonder if the police could use that as evidence!
