Thursday 5th November quote
I am in a good position to buy a new car. Previously I have had a Cerbera and loved it, but sold it to buy a house. Now I have the chance to return to the TVR fold again. I like the T350 as it meant to be better to deal with on a daily basis. I won’t to that many miles, but the trips I do will be quite long, say 220miles return twice a week. This will mostly be on M'way, so I suspect there will be a few jams on the way (are these engines good in traffic?)

So really, would a T350 be ok for about 1000miles a month, in long journeys, good in traffic? I am not bothered about the debate for or against the SP6 engine. It will be serviced at Castles and if it goes pop it goes pop.

Any thoughts really appreciated,

Cheers

A T350 will be perfect. They prefer longer journeys as you probably know being a TVR person.

I've done 5000 miles in the last 4 months in mine.

Its fine! TVR's work better if they get used rather than looked it.

Are there any issues with the car running hot? I know in the Cerbera the temp would jump up to 110 sometimes and needed a constant eye kept on it. Uprating the radiator and fitting a different cooling chip fixed.

Also, AC, is that standard or what ;-)

Temps are usually fine, even in hot weather in traffic. We got stuck on the M5 last year in a massive traffic jam in 30 degree heat and whilst the car wasn't too happy, she coped fine. I was more worried about the clutch than the engine temp!

Air con isn't standard and many people have arguments for and against the necessity of it, but personally I wouldn't buy one without; the heat soak from the engine bay can make things rather uncomfortable on a hot day!

They love a long journey, and as long as everything's working right, they don't mind sitting in traffic either. Good to periodically check that both fans are kicking in, and that the coolant level is normal. At your suggested mileage, you should be having a regular service anyway, so these things will be maintained well. Mine's for sale in the classifieds, and has aircon, and enjoys a long blast and traffic jam so everyone can have a good gawp in equal measures!

I've used mine as a daily drive (except in the snow) for almost four years.
I've done 36,000 miles and had very few problems (new clutch earlier in the year), it never requires oil between services, and only rarely needs water. The tyres seem to last well too.
It's absolutely fine for every day use although I would hesitate to use it for short journeys where it wouldn't get up to temperature (takes about 5-10 miles depending on the weather). No problems at all in traffic jams, even in hot weather, provided the coolant is kept topped up.
I have averaged 23mpg, going up to 28mpg on long trips.

I'm in St.Albans, so not too far from you. Email me if you fancy popping over for a look. I work in Luton, but work from home a lot, so can easily see you during a weekday if preferred.

Zippee's mpg sounds in line with mine. The longer the journey, the better the fuel economy, though you eventually have to stop for petrol!

You guys get impressive fuel economy.

I get about 130 miles to a tank and the tank is about 55litres. I make that 11mpg! Now I appreciate some people may get in the high teens by driving more sedately, but 28mpg? Are you kidding me!

Note: I am definitely not thrashing the engine, I have experimented driving in higher gears and lower revs to see if the result is any different, and it isn't. I get this fuel economy driving on 40/50 mph roads. Is there something up with the car?

It sounds like you have something out of wack. I get more than that thrashing around the Alps, never mind pottering at 90mph which gives me 26mpg (and I have a 3.91 dff = 8% ish higher revs in 5th = 8% more fuel consumed?? - I think).

I agree - I'm no saint when driving but 20 is my average, never as low as 11! I'd get it looked at if I were you!

Avg. to a tank is 140-160. Best i've had is 203 miles.

You'll do very very well to get 55 litres in a tank... More like 45-48.

I tend to refuel around 10 litres, and it reads 52L when full. Leaves 42L to play with - less than 10 gallons. I easily get more than 200 miles from that.

I got 280 out a tank yesterday! 200 of that was on the motorway. Though I do play the 'Petrol Light Lottery' - the 4l warning first came on about 40 miles before I gave in and filled up with another 46.75 litres of V-Power.
Anyone getting only 11 miles per gallon (other than on the track) must have a problem. With the car or the maths, how many litres are you getting in when you fill up or are you (foolishy, perhaps) believing what the fuel guage tells you?

Mines currently on 172 with about 8 litres indicated as remaining. Though when I normally fill up it'll squeeze around 35 litres in at this point. Most I've had is 220 with 2 litres remaining and thats as low as I'm prepared to go.
I learnt long ago not to trust the guauge and so always fill up around the 160-180 mile mark where I squeeze circa £35-40 worth of fuel in.
