Sorry, no. There are always watermarks left after cleaning the car, but they are never as dull or widespread as on your grille. It looks as if something corrosive has got on the metal. Maybe removing a slat and polishing it with Brasso or Silver Polisher will do the trick.

I replaced by 8-bar grille with a 6-bar one on my V8V. One thing I noticed was how much better the older 8-bar one was built: Each bar is made out of a solid piece of metal (strong enough to be used as a sword) and was firmly attached to the vertical brackets. Furthermore, it appears the metal was painted with a clear coat to protect the finish.

The newer 6-bar grille, by comparison, has bars that are much flimsier, bendable and delicate. It looks like they are made of a folded metal (there is a seam on the underside of each one that runs the full length) and they slide side-to-side on the vertical brackets whilst mounted on the car. They also appear to be uncoated which causes them to leave stains much easier if water is left to dry on them. The stains do rub off easily on them with just a rag though.

For you guys with the persistent stains on the grille, does your car live outdoors?

hi KarlFranz
I have just got the car and it is garaged. I don't know the previous history. The stain seems to be some kind of corrosive material, as if it has taken the top layer of metal off...strange

I to have the same problem. I took my car to a metal finisher who informed me the problem is that the grill is aluminium with a varnish/laqueer coating. The coating has had a chemical reaction and no amount of polishing will make it better. I have had the coating removed and are to get it re laqured by a car repairer.
