Surely it also depends on what you want the car for. I would say that the Aston is a lot of fun but not suitable as an every day driver. The XKR on the other hand could happily be driven every - providing you have deep pockets.
The Aston can most certainly be an every day driver - as many on here besides me will confirm I'm sure.yup - daily driver here too...covered 20K miles in the last 11 months in it without issue
I didnt consider the Jag as I actually wanted an Aston - surely when considering spending 60K + on a car one dosent worry too much about value for money etc - you tend to buy with your heart rather than your head I think once you are out of rep mobile diesel territory etc and my heart says Aston every time - ...I will save the 3 year old Jag saloon bargains for when im in my 50's thanks

murph you seem like quite a seasoned poster - 2000+ - Does that mean you have never posted/browsed in a car forum outside of your current fleet????
tbh I rarely do (and have never been to the Jag forum - is there one? ).But when I do, I tend not to go into them and note that the car I have is nicer than that particular marque's "equivalent"...doing such things only results in the responses you've had, and is ultimately pointless
But each to their own.
The XKR is a nice motor. The styling is unresolved IMO, and in certain places unnecessarily fussy and immature. But it's a massive improvement on the old car. Hopefully Tata will continue to allow the marque to progress, though I fear stylistic fussiness may continue when you consider their other models.

OK guys, I will bow to your greater experience on this. I currently run a Jag XJ as an every day driver with an F430 in the garage. Mrs BC runs a TVR every day (5 litre Chim).
I had always thougth that Astons like Ferrari's would not really be up to a high milage and the deprecitation on a high miler would be horrible. In think in the past that was definately the case.
Perhaps I should look again

OK fair enough, looking at my post i can see how you guys thought i might be running down the Aston - that wasn't my intention, just trying to draw a comparison.I loved the Aston when I had it.
I don't agree with some of the comments that have followed re my post but ...each to their own .
I will concede though - the jag doesn't sound as good as the aston !!!

Now having heard an XKR accelerate away the other day I actually thought it sounded pretty good, if a little quiet.I don't agree with some of the comments that have followed re my post but ...each to their own .

I'm glad Jag make the car - it's a nice motor and I can understand why people buy them. And I really hope they continue to improve them.

An interesting post (the OP, I mean).
I've had a couple of XKR's and several Astons - given the designer, I don't think a comparison is a bad thing at all. They seem close enough to my eye to make a comparison interesting.
The AMV8 is a beautiful thing and the XKR looks 'similar' - but that aside, I reckon XKR's are very underated and in some ways eclipse some Aston models.
well today i drive an brand new XKR convertible as a loaner while my Aston is due to service......
its very plastic everywhere..... and has a kinda lack of style ....
but hey its only a loaner and its for free
PS. sorry for my bad english - i don't live on her Majesties island...

I wasn't going to get involved in the comparisons but I can't help myself....its very plastic everywhere..... and has a kinda lack of style ....

When you say very plastic everywhere you really mean just the bit on the centre console as everywhere else it's all nice leather or aluminium yeah, and can you explain a bit more on how it "Lacks style"?
The important questions though, how did it drive? How was the ride? did you like the gearbox? Did you try it in manual mode? what did you think of the power of the car?, was it overall a nice place to be in? how did it handle?(I kinda know what your answers will be but thought I'd ask anyway )
I'm not trying to be argumentative here but many comparisons lack any real substance over and above "it's not an Aston", I like Astons, I think they're lovely, but I think a bit style over substance. which begs an interesting question, if the V8 Vantage didn't have an Aston badge on it would everyone like it as much?????
John.
