Steve, under no circumstances should I make light of this, as you're clearly having to deal with an obstinate, dishonest and cantankerous neighbour, but I've just discussed this very subject in the pub with AMDBSNick, and I'm really sorry, but we were both crying with laughter.

I do however have a plan:

Should you wish, I could, theoretically of course, organise for some airborne noise, which would make him long for the sound of a V8V blipping at 0500. We do work 24/7 and are of course here to help. whistle

Can you pick me up at my house, then fly me down to Silverstone for the F1? That would be very helpful indeed biggrin

An athlete? Well unless you're the gorgeous Jessica Ennis they should burn you at the stake! :-)

I read the first part and thought that I would also be pissed off at 5am being woken up. Then I read your solution and thought what a sensible bloke and then I read the bit about the old duffer. If you want me to drive around with my BR modified exhaust I am available biggrin . What a complete arse your neighbour is. The others sound sensible as you would expect, he just is one of those annoying half wits that needs to get a life. He obviously has nothing better to do and to lie to the other neighbours is just pathetic. Rant over.

Up until two weeks ago Jess was a neighbour of mine (moved up market now) and left each morning for training in her XKR and none of us complained.

Must be a British athlete thing? Sponsorship?
If she drove one, so does Chris Hoy and Wiggo

Key questions are:

Do you own or rent the house?
Does he own or rent his house?

Neighbour disputes are always far more fun if you rent and they own as they're legally bound to declare it on a buyer's request if they sell.

As for this chap.
What a horrible miserable old sod.

I would report him to the council or plod (non emergency of course) for harassment. They will at least start of record of a dispute (it's coming it seems whether you like it or not) and you'll have your two-penneth in first.

Spreading lies is not on; is slander illegal? I think so, it could affect your career.

Cut the head off the snake.

frown what better flying experience then? biggrin

Or what if I pulled a really tidy lass with very expensive tastes, and told her I would take her out in my personal helicopter? Surely that would fall under "here to help"? biggrin

I'm liking the remote sock idea....

Anyway having returned from training all day today, I spoke to a few neighbours.
Of course apologising first, then explaining and discussing the issue, and that i will start it up in the garage from now on to quieten things a little.
All bar 1 (of 6 neighbours I spoke to), were very polite, understanding and actually not really THAT concerned. But this 1 chap...
He was the initiator and petition writer.
Oooooh he was not a happy bunny. Despite my patience and good manners, my apologetic nature and ideas for dealing with the issue, he was incredibly rude, insistent that I sell my car! And that if he as so much hears a remote alarm "blip" at 5am he'll report me to the council!
He wasn't the guy in the pink shirt of millionaire boy racers was he?? Anyway, there's no need for people like him. Im bak on your side. Tell him to f*** off!

What aload of cowards.

Buy an old banger (e.g. Mini Metro) with a really tiny peashooter/blowing exhaust instead.

My Nine isn't noisy when idling either (beleive it or not) but the initial start up, the flare of revs... From the silence of pre-dawn darkness to the cacophony of the rich fuelling of 8 cylinders exploding from cold, it's not far off firing a gun! Driving away isn't a problem, it's just the start up I expect.
