You'd be better to call this a rear diff failure rather than continuing to call it a box failure. Therefore this is not likely attributed to the lack of gearbox cooling but rather a misassembled/misadjusted pinion/ring
The box and diff are in the same casing and share the same coolingThey are one item provided by Graziano
And I agree it was probably a manufacturing defect, however there are sign of overheating which will only accelerate the problem
Gentlemen, I am dissapointed that this topic has generated such venom and descended to personal insults.
I have enjoyed friendly banter with many of you, including Ike,and personal insults get Mikey nowhere in resolving the problem.
In my opinion,Ike and Frankie offered a view, one which is obviously not shared by others, but it was framed in a reasonable manner.
An issue such as this will always give rise to contrary opinions, some more apposite and informed than others.

We are all disappointed Steve. It would have steered a much better and on target course without the input of one of those people you mentioned above. Sadly we have to put up with his cretinous behaviour, such is the nature of online and open forums I have enjoyed friendly banter with many of you, including Ike,and personal insults get Mikey nowhere in resolving the problem.

The initial part of the project took Johhny from 420 to 494 for around 100 miles with no prolonged high speed running (worst case to heat diff).
Lance (V12V) has done a fair few thousand miles at the hands of Cockers on the same pinion but at 570BHP with no problems.
It is also a common part in the race boxes, I asked Mike about failures on those. BR are finding about 3 in 10 race gearbox refreshes they perform needs a new pinion due to the same failure as Johnny. There is no rhyme or reason to this and the consensus is parts imperfections. The condition is accelerated by the fact the oil pump, pipe and cooler matrix was replaced by just having cooling fins on ASM2.

Frankie did leap in with both feet first, however, since he only joined in February this year, he probably hasn't read about the extraordinary time and care being taken over the entire project. Nothing is being rushed and Mikey has been very modest in not over publicising this. It would be an interesting read for Frankie and would give him an insight into the world of indies other than AMWS.
The other bloke, well what can one say?

Mikey, really sorry to hear the news but your car is in the best hands and it sounds like you are being very well looked after.
I think you are doing a fantastic job of keeping this thread on track and addressing what clearly could be a concern for owners with ASM transmissions.
Looking forward to hearing stories of your travels when she's back on the road. Good luck!

Really? Who would you rather work on your car?
Frankie, by your own admission, you're new to Aston ownership. I'm curious why you think you know much more than people who have owned several Astons over many years? I'm in my sixth year of AM ownership now and have used 5 independents and one main dealer. I have settled on BR as the one for me. Why do you think you know better? MollyGTi said:

Here's the orginal purchase thread as well

Tis true Mikey, mine covered 4000 hard miles at 570bhp including Wales and Spa (not sure I ever mentioned Spa?), many high speed motorway runs and numerous hard acceleration cycles without ill effect. Sorry to hear that you have an issue with the box that was obviously knackered from day 1 and trust that it is ready for Rockingham

Too bad the dealer/Aston didn't respond to your initial complaints of diff whine from new. At least your repaired unit should be good to go for at least as long as you own the car. Just make sure that the new parts are x-rayed or at least FPI'd. Don't need any more flawed pinions in there!

Yes I probably did jump in with both feet, fuelled by a Friday evening large dose of Rioja! It is true I am very new to Aston ownership, in fact I haven't picked the car up yet but this will happen in less than a fortnight now...it's a manual SP10 coupe as if you could not guess by name! I'm buying the car from AMW and have been completely seduced by the folk, heritage and enthusiasm there. The other bloke, well what can one say?
The point I was trying to make, albeit looking back now with a blunt instrument and being new to Aston is in part my defence here is that I can't understand why would anyone want to tinker/improve, what for me is, a beautiful perfect and aspirational car. For me the pinnacle of vehicle ownership. And why would anyone want to use a non Aston independent to work on these gorgeous cars.
I of course realise I am extremely fortunate living 5 minutes from AMW and will naturally use them for anything that happens to go wrong and service my soon to be new P&J.
I don't claim to know more than anyone that has owned Astons for numerous years. But sometimes a simple perspective on don't mess with perfection is required. For me my new SP10 is pure perfection, however those that have owned Astons for some time may say different and laugh at my naivety.
Apologies for any offence my Rioja hazed posts caused.

Apologies mistook you as a troll instead of someone new to the marque still learning. I'll blame gin
Why is Mikey modifying his car - because he can and wants the best available.
Oh and when you pick up the car post pictures.
Enthusiastic for the marque, drinking and arguing. You'll fit in well
