What does "Oscar India" mean...

Kind of says it all really...so I turn to the great PistonHead fount of wisdom!

I have seen this on adverts, usually for the "affordable" Astons - is this a model in its own right or a derivation of the V8 of the day.

All guesses / info welcome.

"Oscar India" is a commonly used term for the V8 saloon built after 1978. Essentially, in October 1978 the V8 was dframatically changed, with the inclusion of the Walnut panbelling in the interior, leather headlining, a slightly differnte gearbox with a 3rd gear lock (slightly improving fuel economy), a hump on the bonnet (rather then the air scoop) and a slight "flip" on the rear- the boot forms a slight spoiler. Thereare afew other differences, but these are the main identification points.

Internally the car was known as the "OI"- short for October Introduction date. Aston MD at the time, aviation nut Alan Curtis used the phoenitic alphabet rather then OI- hence Oscar India.

The Aston martin owners Club call this car the "series 4".
