2008 WRX USA Testing....very dissapointing

Oh boy....
The latest incarnation of the WRX isn't only awful to look at but in comparison to a run-of-the-mill FWD Mazdaspeed 3 it's equally awful to drive and doesn't go that well either. What a pile of poo!!

Where's my rope so i can hang myself now....the shame of it!! Oh..Subaru...what have you created

All the new WRX has got is the 0-60 time which to be fair isn't much quicker than the Mazda. I'm not into Mazda's even though i think they are good cars, but it has to be said even this plain Jane Mazda is an improvement on the WRX, inside and out. The Mazda seems to handle the 263bhp quite well though for a FWD so fair play to them.
Let's see what the new STi is like as i've already written off the WRX for now
P.S. Leave the bugeyes out of it....it will be a classic one of these days and true testament to the NEWAGE monika. But then i would say that....

I agree m8, after watching that video it does look like a pile of @@##. Although I have never been a lover of the range i would of thought that Subaru could of surely been able to take their technology and make something special instead of replicating a Korean looking hatch.. Dissapointing i thought that they would of spent huge sums of lolly to keep ahead of the new Mit's EVO.
Competitive manufacturing should produce better cars..........
After watching the video it did make me think, a Subaru WRX for $25,000 dollars, 0 - 60 in under 6 secs. What's that work out to 13k ? uummmmmmmmmmm. All that performance for a price of a basic Clio, 207 ?...... It's makes you wander why car manufacturers consider us Brits as treasure island.
Could it be the next pocket rocket ??

The impreza has always been a balls-to-the-wall "are you looking at my pint?" sort of car. It's main selling point been that it is very capable and looks like a bit of a thug, not pretty but still quite cool.
This new WRX looks like one for the driving glove brigade personally. I assume they'll be doing it in hearing-aid biege..... I wouldn't mind if it had the performance to make up for the lack lustre design but it's no quicker than the eagle eyed WRX (which I think, looks quite nice, but then I would). It's a pity that when I replace my current scooby, I can't see it being the new STi. In fact it's decided me, I'm going to hang on to my current scooby, wait for the warranty to run out and then spend some money on getting as much reliable BHP as possible out of it!

Totally agree....try and squeeze another reliable 100 - 150 ponies out of it and sort the handling (understeer) and you'll have a practical car with supercar go and handling which will be hard to replace. Not to mention a trackday tool that will keep up with more focused trackday tools. This new WRX looks like one for the driving glove brigade personally. It's no Porsche GT3 RS but then again you can't get 4 peeps and all your gear into one of those, and be super comfy, then let your granny drive it to the shops after the previous day's hoon around the Nurburgring
IMHO the old Scooby rules in terms of looks, much more purposeful and agressive, and it could never be called an invalid car, unlike the new WRX which does look like OAP transport and seems to go like it too

Look on the bright side, the resale value of older style scoobys will be made stronger by this. If they're looked after I can see them becoming very sort after cars in years to come.
Gotta get myself that STi RA V-ltd before the prices start to rise again - they don't seem to have dropped much at all over the last 6-12 months here, and our import laws are getting reworked at the start of next year.

I've been saying this about used Scooby prices ever since i got wind of this rubbish Subaru have manufactured.
IMHO i don't think over the next couple of years prices will come down and if anything once it starts becoming harder to find good examples prices will steady and eventually start to creep up as they become classics.
There are plenty around at the mo so it's more of a buyers market, but that will change...remember...what comes down must go up (and i'm not talking knickers!!) just like stalagmites!!

The number of good examples is going to drop quite sharply as examples come into the Ned price bracket. A mate of mine is an accident recovery and repair guy. He pulls at lest 1 old scooby a week out of the local scenery. Add to that the number that don't get looked after and I predict that the next 10 years will see very few good proper scoobys around. Look at the premium paid for cossies!
I got a call from Christopher Neil asking me if I'd like to go and have a look at this new model. I presume Subaru are hawking an early release example around it's dealerships (I couldn't make it, not that I was that fussed). The Chris Neil website seems quite keen for scooby owners to "let them know what you think" of this model. Chris Neil has a showroom full of Exiges, Boxsters, Nobles and STi Imprezas, and dumped in the middle of all this sexy metal will be this blob of vagueness. I bet they were so pleased

You should get them to come on to PH Jap Chat and direct them to all the comments about the New Scoobs from when they first started. See how keen they are keep the Subaru Franchise after a good read.
I cannot imagine anything worse than putting a great big steaming turd like the new Subaru right in the middle of all the nice cars you mentioned. What an awful thing to do.

I have a 2006 WRX.
I think that might help slow down the depreciation of mine.
I was in at Subaru on Saturday drooling over a RB32 and the sales man obviously fought his Subaru corner and told me how the new model is much better than my own and that you can only appreciate it in the flesh.
BOLLLLOCKS!!!!!!!

Subaru has never made a "Pretty" Cars look for a Picture the very First classic's, they were POOH then went V1, V2, V3,V4 were the best lookers were V5 and V6 IMHO
This does have the ring of the 2001 WRX bugeye. I did say I'd never buy one
later in the year Prodrive restyled the STi 02 with bumper, sills and Spoiler. They turned the "Frog" into a Rally Car (not even god could turn it into a Swan) It performed well and looked the Part So i bought a brand new one and loved it
Down under they've already changed the Grille, I'ts going to take more than a Grill to please UK tastes
But with the UK Sti due out early spring. And apparantly tweaked like the STi2002 With different bumper, sills and Spoiler etc. emulating 2009 WRC rally in car looks.
Although heard a downside, The STi has only 5 speed box which on Torquey 7krpm 2.5ltr is OK but not brill on a 8krpm 2.0ltr JDM. IMHO
"If" they can get some WRC results and these Cosmetic changes, They should get bums on seats to try it from there on it will be about it handling and preformance
OK it's still a Hatchback, looks aren't everything (as my wife said) but the performance, drive and presence is
IMHO

Well....I love my 'Bugeye' and IMHO i think this snatchback looks worse. I sincerely hope the STi will be a different kettle of fish, and if it is it may well restore some faith in Subaru.
However.....any way you look at it they've really fcuked up the WRX, not only in terms of looks but performance and handling as well. I'd put my Bugeye up against the new WRX anytime and i would still go for the Bugeye.

I had a bugeye saloon and whilst it wasn't pretty it still had the essence of impreza about it. If one was behind you or in front of you (more often the case ) then you new what it was. The most distressing thing about this incarnation is that unless you are a complete car geek or you're close enough to read the name you're not going to have a clue what it is. Even people who knew nothing about cars would know to say, "there's one of them imprezas" (usually in a disapproving tone), now they aren't even going to notice they exist.
They might have rescued this if the new WRX had the performance to trounce it's critics, but it doesn't. The new STi is going to have to make up some ground, although if it looks something like the new WRC car then they might be worth a look, but I can't honestly see me investing my hard-earned in a 3rd scooby (unless it's a 22B or maybe a P1 to play with).
