Hi all.

Seen this topic on another forum, but not too much info on it at the moment.

Apparently, all 530D's have the webasto auxillary heater installed & it kicks in once the engine has started if the temp is below 10c. This aids engine warm-up.

It is said that you can buy the remote 'plipper' from BMW & turn it on & off from inside your house to warm the engine & interior (demist)before you set off. It's about £400 IIRC.

Has anyone done this, & if so, is it worth doing/worth the money?

Cheers,

Gwaredd.

wouldn't that be a huge drain on the battery to warm up the engine and to demist the windows?

My 530d sport had it fitted - its a little diesel fired boiler and pump, sits on the near-side of the gearbox (I know that cos mine got ripped off by a rock at 100mph ...but thats another story). You can have it upgraded to pre-heat the engine and cabin, so there isn't a massive battery drain, as your only running a small pump and a fan for 10-15 mins - think of it as a little boiler for the car. There is also a nice little feature on them where you can turn the car off, then push one of the heater buttons (can't remember which) and it'll keep the fan and pump running til all the heat has been extracted from the engine - useful if you're sitting somehwere cold waiting for someone perhaps.

UPDATE: Pinched from another forum.

Subject: Re: Aux Heater E39 530 diesel
Please find a copy of an email I received from Rod Gascoyne the Sales Services Manager for Webasto GB

Dear Sir

Thank you for your valued enquiry regarding the above.

As you are aware, the BMW 5 Series Diesel is fitted with the Webasto Thermo Top C fuel-burning heater as standard, which is used as a supplementary heater. In this application, the Webasto heater only operates when the engine is running and the outside temperature is below 5°C. In conjunction with BMW GB, we have developed a simple upgrade, which includes the addition of a simple electrical interface harness, which will switch the heater on independently.

The parked car heater is started by a remote control device and warms the coolant independently from the vehicle's engine. The vehicle's blower system takes the warm air into the cabin and, at the same time, pre-heats the engine.
Once this upgrade has been installed, it will provide pre-heating for your vehicle prior to commencing your journey.

Some of the benefits associated with such a system are as follows:

· Warmth and comfort of a pre-heated interior - a centrally heated interior.
· Screen defrost and demist - increase safety with a safer clearer vision through the windscreen at the start of your journey.
· Pre-heated engine - no more cold starts/easier starting.
· A pre-warmed engine - a better engine response from cold.
· Reduced engine wear
· Reduced engine emissions - lower emissions from a preheated engine.
· "Just drive off straight away and enjoy your journey."

The standard installation includes full system integration with the parking heater controlled by a Telestart Remote Control. This allows switching on and off of the system by a remote control handset with a range of 600 metres.

In the UK, this accessory is exclusively offered by official BMW Dealerships under the following BMW Part Number: 95.06.0.000.008 or 95.06.0.000.009 (dependent upon model year), therefore you should contact your local BMW Dealer, quoting either of these part numbers in order to obtain the full technical and product support expected within the BMW programme.

So, it seems as though all BMW 530D's have one, but it's a BMW part only to get it going remotely. Hmmm, may look into that.

Cheers,

Gwaredd.

Ok, another update for all you cold haters.

The 530D's ARE fitted with this heater as standard after 2000-. Mine has one in it as it fired up the other night when it was very cold.

I have souced someone on the internet that will supply the genuine BMW retro fitting kit for £305inc. I will recieve it next week & hopefully I'll be fitting it next weekend. If you read you hand book, it tell's you all about it. I think this will be great in these colder months, especially as we have another baby on the way, due in January, so I'll be happy that the car is all warm & defrosted for him/her.

And how many people do you see driving along with only a small clear patch of de-frosted windscreen in the winter? This should be great if it does what it says on the tin.

Cheers,

Gwaredd.

My 2000 M5 has this. I can set a timer so it warms the car in the morning.
I was under the (incorrect?) impression it stored heat from the engine...

The Webasto heater fitted on all 530d/525d and X5 3.0d's are the engine pre-heaters.

That is a completely different thing. This time of year most BMW dealers will have an offer on so they will fit it for you for about the same money.

They are brill btw

Yes, but they can be converted to run as an aux heater with this retro kit (max heat for 30 mins directed to screen, windows & floor via remote on/off switch only, unless you have the high OBC, then it can be programmed for a certain time.)

Will ring BMW tomorrow & see how much they want for supply & fit.

Well, it's all fitted & working fine. Took me 2 hours to fit & the only specialist tools I needed were a 10mm socket on a bendy extension & a No.20 torx screwdriver.

Nice & toasty & saved myself nearly £300 by not letting the $stealer do it (fitted price was nearer £600 when I confirmed)

Now all I need is another cold snap to test it properly.

Cheers,

Gwaredd.

Well done - sounds great. Brother in law had the cold weather kit fitted to his old Saab 9000 a few years ago. Was always envious of him on cold winter mornings....

Unfortunately mine aint plumbed in for all of this. Shame as I really would like it. Guess I need to upgrade then

apologies for digging up an old topic but I recently purchased an X5 and unbeknown to the dealer it has a webasto heater fitted to it. However, it doesnt have a programme in the computer to allow me to turn it on (either directly or via a timer) and I note from this topic that it is possible to enable this functionality (including the option of remote operation)

Can someone let me know where I can get the parts from and cost? And, how much work is involved in setting the system up? thanks.

I had a 530d e39

Is this anything to do with the rest button on the dash.

This button, will run the fans for 30 mins after you exit the vehicle provided that it is up to the right temp, it keeps it nice and warm when you go shopping etc

go onto Bmwland. we figured all this webasto stuff out ages ago... here you are

http://www.bmwland.co.uk/talker/viewtopic.php?t=41...

and here

http://www.bmwland.co.uk/talker/viewtopic.php?t=38...

basically BMW disables the timed heating function in the uk so it doesn't show up on your obc. however, you can get the aircon module recoded to a euro spec which will have the heating function. or you can install a telestart.. much easier..

as standard your heater fires up automatically on cold days ( 10oc or below) and when the engine is cold to assist heeating of the engine block only..

the telestart will give you remote control of your heater to use it when you want. it also has the added benefit of automatically turning on the interior fans a few minutes after the heater has fired to warm the cabin in cold days.. all this is already inside your bmw. you just have to apply 12 volts to pin 1 and this sends a signal via k-bus from the webasto to the air con module which fires up the fans..

the telestart is just a timer for this...

take a look on the bmwland forums
