I have a airbag warning light on in my E46 328I. Also after I serviced the car I want to reset the service indicators.

I have seen alot of cheap chinese diagnostic tools available from ebay but before I splash out the best part of a £100 I was hoping to get a recommendation.

Which tool do you have or buy and from whom?

Thanks in advance.

Al

If thats all you want it for then you need a 'service reset too' not a diagnistics tool as they are different things. The diagnostics reads the ECU for stored faults.
Unless you buy something for over a grand which can monitor O2 levels etc as you drive.

a lead for inpa costs £50 and can read and reset fault codes.

Will this work on an E39 and if so where do I get one?

I've got the Peake R5/SRS one which I've used on a few E36s successfully. You need the AB03 adaptor for later ones

What else do I need? Some software for my laptop, presumably?

Indeed, you need the INPA software.
I will see if I can upload it somewhere tomorrow for you.

You will also need a PCMCIA-RS232 adapter, unless you have a serial port on your laptop.

Also you need a pc running XP

Nice one, that would be fantastic if you could. Is it XP only or will it run on Vista also? No worries either way, just need to nab a spare laptop from work if it's XP only.

No idea about vista.

Be careful though, this software is pretty powerful, it's the one they use in the Factories and if you do the wrong thing there is a chance it will bugger your car up.

At the moment I just need to pull up whatever fault is switching the airbag light on (suspect passenger occupancy sensor pad) and then reset it once I have replaced it. Is that reasonably straightforward?

Micky mouse, just don't play with more advanced stuff unless you know what you're doing.
