It appears that old habits die hard.

Walked into BMW garage in South Yorks last Sunday with the proverbial £40k in my pocket to enquire about a 330D. Neither sales guy appeared to be too interested, and now 5 days later, I haven't even had a 'phone call.

Is this still the BMW way? I really must have been reading the wrong figures on global car sales at the moment, as this particular manufacturer is clearly not interested in selling them. Are we suddenly in a rationing situation???

As an X BMW salesman I think they are lazy or don't care. Why not try and ask for help mentioning you have 40k in your pocket and see them react. Don't blame the car though, just get it from someone else.

I suspect that the salesman saw you for what you were. Let me guess.. You were dressed in torn dirty jeans & an offensive T Shirt. You had an extremely mouthey fat lady with you - & probably a couple of loud mouthed snotty nosed kids saying (looking at the most expensive car in the showroom) "Daaaaad, we want that ooneee!! "Squeal"!!!

Not many people short of Irish Travellers or Simon Cowell can afford to spend £40,000 on a car today. You are either a "Rip-Off" Electrician/Plumber or work for one of the TV Companies.

The majority of good men who have spent the last 6 years working for HM Government in Iraq & Afghanistan would call you a wker- as I do. Go think about your lifestyle preferences - & what lives you could save in Africa for only £10 a month.

Interesting responses - although things appear to have gone a little off topic methinks ;-)

The point wasn't that you may not agree with my motives for car buying (for the record, not particularly after something too big, but need back seats. Still want sporty drive and enough power, but I'm fed up with my present daily visits to the pumps). The amount of money should have been irrelevant - point was that I was a serious cash buyer and treated as an inconvenience.

I was looking for someone to come forward from the forum saying that there was the potential to be treated seriously by a car salesman in South Yorks - and maybe point me in the right direction! I do find it a bit frustrating that we are supposedly in the worst car buying situation for some considerable time and yet the salesmen still don't treat customers with any respect at all.

If it matters I was wearing a reasonably smart long sleeved top and jeans - I wasn't however aware that there was a dress code for these visits. Maybe my lifelong aversion to BMW ownership was well founded afterall - clearly I don't fit the brief!!!!

I do however find it interesting that this has turned into a how could you spend £?? on a car discussion. From my memories of PH from years gone by, this isn't really the place to be if you object to people paying almost list price for cars costing ten or twenty times the figure mentioned, let alone a reasonably standard showroom car.

I was just about to have a rant at you for your usual assumption that nobody should ever buy a new car, ever, and should always buy a nice 4 year old one instead. Then i thought for a second, indeed who the hell would spend 40k on a 330d - thats mental! hehe

WTF? How did a "why isn't my dealer interested" post turn into a (i) you're a tw*t cos you can afford a nice new car, and (ii) you're a tw*t for buying a diesel type debate?

The former should p1ss off away from PH to a lentalist forum elsewhere and the latter should just accept that for some people the diesel will suit them more than the equivalent petrol. And yes, I do have a diesel 3 series with a list price of £47k, as well as a rather nice petrol one.

The OP asked a valid question FFS.

Well said.

And what is the big problem with buying new cars round here?

I had a poor experience in a well known Farnborough dealership recently. I waited 5 days for the quotations I was promised and got nothing. Maybe I should have suspected trouble when the salesman told me that their sales had been completely unaffected by the economy. rolleyes

I think the point is, or the points...

1, Sales persons don't want cash. They want commission on the finance.

2, The sales persons are so used to selling cars to folk who have the company money to spend, not there own and therefore have forgot how to do their job.

£40k could have been a gift from a dying relative....

£40k could have been saved up for 10 years

Oh and just because you are wealthy, it most certainly does not mean you need to spend money unnessecarily ( like on extra fuel costs )..

(the last part of my post is soley focusing on your post and not bring other things into context)

Easily the funniest most odd post I have read as of today. The way you managed to assume what he does for a living, sg it off, sg him off just because he has more cash to spend than you......

And you managed to bring Iraq and Afghan into it whilst calling him a wker is even better.
