I quite like the C63's, but they have a bit of an image problem where I live!

I do fancy that engine though, but would probably get it in the E, they seem better value. If went for the C it would probably have to be the estate.

I keep going back and back to XFR's though, the M135 was just an option to save a bit on running costs, which at my current mileage I'm not bothered about, but if it doubled it would become an option or necessary.

I'm going to hold tight for another year I think, i still think they've some dropping to do, specially if he new shape R is released.

I dunno, much as I liked the XF when they came out I think they've dated pretty badly. My choice would definitely be an E63 wagon.

I'd be tempted by the XFR by virtue of not being German. The pre-facelift doesn't look as good as the facelift but it's a fantastic place to sit.

I've driven a couple of XFR's, they are very quick. The infotainment can be quite slow if that sort of thing annoys you, but otherwise they are nice things. Rear leg room isn't great either

My mate has just bought a cla diesel. I think it's the biggest engine and relatively new. It's nice inside so maybe the v8 turbo variety could work. I think the original atmo 63 engine is awesome but it's too similar to the 550 to warrant a change.

I've not driven an XFR yet, if I did I'd just want one straight away no doubt and that would be just torture.

I think the regular XF looks a bit dated, and the facelift improves it hugely but I still think the R looks so much better, deeper front bumper balances it out well. I think this looks awesome personally....

I can cope with the infotainment being a bit slow, can it be much worse than the CCC in mine now?

If only the ISF came with an LSD it would be near top of the list, I like the fact it's not German and that's the same for the Jag, they're a bit different and not the obvious choice.

I'll mull it over, no rush to change. If

It would be worse, but not a deal breaker if you're ok with what you've got now.

Performance, and especially noise wise, different planet!

If that's the v8 we all have here then smashie had a new block because his was broke. I think the cost was about 5 grand. I found an ad for a guy on ebay who will fit new valve seals also for about £800. Neither of these are a full recon but give you an idea. Whats wrong with your engine?

Second hand engine may develop the same faults and end up costing you a lot more. Quotes for a top end rebuild I've seen range from £1,300 to £3,000.

I was unfortunately unlucky in that I eventually found out that there was a score to the bore of piston 5, leading to the new block.
When BMW fist gave me a quote, I rang around a few other places and I could have got the engine reconditioned for around 3k. However I ended up paying BMW for a new block because by getting the new block I was not paying for the valve stem oil seal work they had done. If I did not get the block done by them, then I would have had to pay for that work and it did not work out paying for that and then getting the engine fixed elsewhere.

One thing I will say is for something like valve stem seals, don't look at the BMW specialists. Look at engine specialists as they will be cheaper.

Anyone know if high oil consumption is a sign of valve seals on these engines? Mine still runs like a cashmere coated lightning bolt but started to drink lot of oil...a litre every couple of months and it only does a few short journeys a week...very very low miles.

no leaks anywhere - spotless drive, so definitely drinking it...just hope it;s something easily fixed :-)

If it idles fine and then you put your foot down and get a great big puff of smoke, then it is likely to be the valve stem oil seals (or in my case a score in the bore). It could of course just as likely be something nice and cheap like the CCV or a split breather pipe.

Mine does this. I just accept it is a fact of life. Either keep putting oil in, sell the car or go for new seals.

Surely the consumption would have to be ridiculous to consider doing a job like that?

I forked out a load of money not because of the oil consumption, but because I wanted it to be in top condition mechanically. This has unfortunately now set a precedent in that it means that I will need to get anything that goes wrong fixed as I will never get the money back that I spent so I may as well keep the car going indefinitely. Track rod ends next!

What sort of oil consumption did you have?

Had about a litre every 2 hundred miles. Also smoked out 2 lanes on the M25 when pulling away!

Ok fair enough that's quite severe...

I put about half a litre in mine, that was over about 5000 miles. I don't think that's anything like unusual. No smoking and no clouds of smoke either!

If it developed an issue it would still have to be quite severe (like Smashie's, although was something different) to have the job done.
