I've had a 54 plate 120D SE for about 10 weeks and my average has been 35mpg. 70% town, 30% motorway and I haven't been hammering it.
That's pretty poor! I get near that from a 3.0 petrol!PJR said:

I get 42mpg out of my facelift 120D M Sport auto. Mixed driving, not much M way, got 47 over a tank once.
ver.
That ties in very well with what I have got from an early 120D SE Auto. Although if only driven around town, MPG's are mid 30's.ver.
P,

Best MPG about 65 on the motorways, kept at 70mph or so. If you can be arsed to drive slower (55-60), the MPG will increase and an average 70-72 is possible!
ETA: It works the other way of course (more speed = less MPG) but that said it is the only car I have ever owned that will cruise at a ton and return 40-43MPG while doing so!!
Average day to day MPG is about 48-51MPG although this does not include driving on motorways or dual carriageways (my commute is 7 miles urban and any business travel during the week is generally within the 30 and 40 limits in the city).
It is some way short of BMWs 62.8MPG 'combined' claim, but very very good nonetheless.
£35 a year road tax (or 13% BIK company car tax) is a bonus however.

I see mentions on the forum of tuning boxes, are they worthwile for the 1 series, what are the best ones? I assume they would invalidate my warranty (it is a BMW approved car)
Was just going to ask the same, having mention earlier I achive early 50's every day of the week in my 118d (2008), with a tuning box would I be able to get up to the late 50's early 60's, taking in to account the car has only done some 2000 miles now so hardly broken in. Plus what would the box do to my warranty?texasjohn said:

I think BMW pulled their finger out significantly with the later Efficient Dynamics cars. Not only did they improve the official figures, the vehicles were also more capable of achieving them in real life.Best MPG about 65 on the motorways, kept at 70mph or so. They needed to, the originals were so far off what they should have been. Ironically one of the reasons I originally chose the 120 over my current car was its alleged efficiency.
