So I was driving the BMW today, as a nice little change from the panda, and worked out that it would do 560 miles to a tank, which seems pretty good, so finally worked out using my maths, that it was doing 38 miles to the gallon, this is bloody ridiculous! The 100HP only does this when being driven very carefully around town. The E34 is a very wafty car though and one can easily be driving it for hours at some speeds and getting quite good MPG. I was just quite surprised, is this normal, low or high for a 20 year old 2.5 litre BMW?

I also drive a 525i petrol, on my 60 mile daily commute which is mainly 'A' roads and a bit stop/start my average rarely drops below 34mpg but more often it's around the 36-38 mark. A recent trip to Devon (about 280 miles) according to the OBC my average was 38.1 and that was a mix of 'A' roads, motorways and a complete halt on the M5.

Can't really complain too much about that :-)

Don't the E34 models have a 80L tank?

yup, and i wish many other cars did too to be honest. however, was a bit of a shock when i completely filled a much MUCH less economical E34 535i up a couple of months ago that i was borrowing for a few weeks!!! £100!

the 525i with vanos is a remarkably economical car for its size and age. i was on the brink of selling the E21 and buying one about 6 months ago but bailed. the 535i is the better engine for the car, except the fuel economy is pretty dire. it's much more relaxed on the motorway due to taller gearing, 3500rpm at 95 which is about 5-600rpm less than the 525i i believe. had to do a 150 mile trip on the motorway in it, i went, erm, quite fast in absolute comfort. the E34 is one of the most comfortable cars i've ever, ever been in (that includes an S class merc).

Big engine, gear ratios keeping engine speed down....as opposed to more revvy panda engine.

I had 36mpg out my E34 540 once.....low motorway speeds from Coventry to south coast, 6th gear, cruise control on, it was barely above idle.....hellishly dull though but I was just trying to make a point......around town it is more like 12 through ha ha ha

Sorry, I was being a bit cryptic - the reasoning behind my comment was (you can check with google):

"560 miles per 75 litres in miles per imperial gallon" -> 34mpg (75L = tank excl. reserve)

"560 miles per 80 litres in miles per imperial gallon" -> 32mpg (80L = tank incl. reserve)

"38 miles per imperial gallon in litres per 560 miles" -> 67L (E39 tank size excl. reserve?)

Reserve tank in an E39?

Have heard this mentioned a few times... mine takes 70 litres, well most I got in it was 68.5 with range at below zero, just 3 dots. Is this true that they have one, or some of them do? Mine's a late 1999 528.

My 525i auto was similarly good on runs and even the 540i would tickle 34mpg biggrin

I now manage to get 35-37mpg from my 3.0 X-type.

All done without being a total snail!
