Real world F30 320d MPG
Discussion
Afternoon,
I'm thinking of getting a F30 320d sport, I'm fed up of chucking money in the tank of my car, the prospect of 50+ mpg and low road tax is very tempting.
I was wondering what real world mpg people are getting out of these, my commute is a lot of stop start quite heavy traffic with a bit of A road thrown in.
My E90 325i was getting 22 on this commute and my Z4M was getting 20. I'm thinking being realistic that 45 to 50 might be achievable?
Any experiences?
Cheers

I've got one on order, and had one for an extended test drive. It had the 8-speed auto box (as that's what I was intending to order). I also had a VW CC GT TDi 170 with the 6-speed DSG box on extended test drive a couple of weeks later.
I used both cars on my normal trip to work, which is a 40-mile mix of dual carriageway, B-roads & (at some points) heavy traffic. The trip usually takes about an hour (so 40mph average speed over the journey, but peaking at around 100 on the odd occasion).
The combined figure for the BMW is 62.8mpg. I got 46.7mpg.
The combined figure for the VW is 51.4mpg. I got 38.7mpg.
The reason I went for the BMW is that I'll save £1700 on fuel over the 3 years I'll have it, and pay considerably less tax because the emissions are lower than the VW. The fact that it's nicer to drive is a bonus.

whatever it runs on the reviews have been oustanding. www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/bmw/3-series/first-dr...
I was given one recently as a loan car during servicing - 320d M Sport manual with circa 1000 miles on clock. Did 50-60 mainly A-road miles in it. Overall very impressed with it but even 50mpg on A-road needed 'nursing' out of it - I averaged about 46. Didn't venture onto a motorway but figured 50mpg or so on a normal speed cruise on free flowing roads would be realistic. Ride quality on M Sport suspension was very good - I live down a farm track with some really badly surfaced local roads and there is no comparison with an E90 on RFT (which I have owned myself and parted with almost exclusively because the ride was so wearing). My only gripe really was that it just felt a bit sluggish but the reality is that I pulled a few overtakes effortlessly enough. Going back to my F20 125d auto revealed that the auto is definitely worthwhile - I thought it was fun driving a manual for the day but that auto box really is superb. 330d must really be something...
A few further thoughts, if you're considering buying one...
The 8-speed auto box is miles better than the 6 or 7-speed VW DSG boxes I've used.
The loan car had an annoying harshness that could be felt through the steering wheel. I think that this was due to the lower sidewalls that you get when you're running on 18" wheels. Consequently I am sticking with the standard 17" wheels. They can only improve the ride quality, and they're cheaper too.
I understand that the latest run-flats aren't as stiff as the previous generations, which should to some extent address the criticism that had been levelled at them ("concrete tyres").
You have three steering options - standard, servotronic & variable sport. The dealers I spoke to recommended the servotronic, and that's what was fitted to the loan car, which felt fine.
You also have three suspension options - standard, M sport & Adaptive M sport. The general concensus on all the forums I trawled was that the Adaptive M sport was a "must have". Most of the magazine tests have used cars with this option too, and they all seem to be very impressed.

Yup, had mine for a few months now and I'm sitting around 47mpg over 2500 odd miles. Motorways at around the legal limit will see you into the 50's, around town low to mid 40's. I've halfed my fuel bills each month since getting rid of the Z4 and (admittedly thirsty!) T5. Don't find the ride harsh at all, and that's on the 19" wheels with the RFTs, but I am used to cars with big wheels and lowered or uprated suspension. It's a very pleasant place to be and has a decent turn of pace when you're in the mood.
I'm getting ~48mpg from my E90 320d Sport Plus (which has the same 184 hp engine the F20 I believe), but that's mostly recorded since late summer onwards, so is slightly winter biased.
In recent weeks the economy has dropped a bit as stop/start doesn't kick in below 3c. I've tried using V-Power diesel to see if I can spot any difference, but in honesty (after several tanks) it feels the same and appears to return roughly the same MPG, so I'll be switching back to regular DERV next tank to double check there is nothing in it.
The MPG is very dependant on how you drive, if you drive with care, and are happy to cruise between 65>70 you'll see 50's without too much drama. I'd expect the 8 speed auto to do a really decent job of keeping the engine in the sweet spot for a reasonably amount of power & economy and that's 1500>2000rpm. So if I were buying an F20 that's probably what I'd pluck for, with the adaptive suspension and probably the M brake kit (because I like futile things like that!).

I have a 320d F30 sport. I am a touch disappointed that it is getting no where near the claimed 75mpg. I have done a few 20-30 mile motorway runs where I have had it in Eco pro mode and achieved 'only' 52mpg. However, I can see that when I drop to 50 or so when breaking or in heavier traffic, that the fuel consumption needle swings right across to 80 mpg. I can therefore see how if I could drive everywhere at 50-56 mph, that 60-70 mpg might be possible...it's just that I can't!
It is a great all rounder though. I have always liked the exterior of any BMW but always found the interior very bland. However, this has now been addressed and the interior mixture of piano black, silver, leather, red stitching etc is the nuts. The £30 road tax is also amazing, given we traded in a Disco 3 for the BMW and had been paying £500pa and getting 30 mpg!

Anyway my new 320d M Sport in Estoril arrives on Saturday, can't wait

My 62 plate e93 manual with that engine is impressive on the derv. Once a week I get an honest 58.6 mpg on a 120 mile run to Lowestoft. Average over the week is 51.2 or thereabouts.
Id imagine the f30 is a bit better, I daresay it is a bit lighter?
Car has done 2500 miles now and the engine feel as though it is loosening up, both in terms of revs and efficiency, although this could be a placebo.
Id recommend the 189 bhp 320d lump.

The extra Urban figure is 74.3mpg. Extra urban is a car up to temperature, ambient temps of between 20-30ºc, accelerating to 70mph and then slowing to 34mph for 7km to average 39mph.
Don't confuse doing motorway speeds with the extra urban figure. It can hit that figure if you follow the test, I know as I could get those figures going up to our place on the North Norfolk coast on a bank holiday weekend stuck at 40-50mph, in our old 57 plate 320d sport touring auto.
I could get 60 from the F11 520d auto.

So I can guarantee the newer f30 will get that, if you replicate the test.

Supposed to be realistic, achievable mpg. It's about right for my 320d ed at 56mpg overall. Should be 54.8 for the standard 320d.
