I'm off on a trackday soon and the track (Llandow) was quite brutal on tyres last year, as I'll be going in the 3.0 Z4 this year what tyre pressures would anyone recommend to avoid too much wear and tear?

It's on standard run flats and at a carlimits day at North Weald the instructor recommended upping the pressures quite a lot (sadly I can't remember what to now rolleyes), though that was a very rough surface.

Don't pump up the tyres too much...because as they get hotter the pressure will increase and you will spend the day letting the air out!

Maybe 2 lbs per tyre, take a pump and digital pressure reader and toy with the front and rears as the day progresses and you get more familiar with the track.

I was in a Focus ST last time and the tyres were a bit scrubbed but ok, an M3 had a rear tyre delaminate and most people noticed quite a bit of wear after the day. It was very hot then though and the track is very grippy which may have contributed to it.

I have been advised, more than once, to run 10-15psi over standard for track days, allegedly to firm-up the sidewalls.

I haven't done that many track days but when I have followed this advice I have noticed LESS wear than if I keep to standard pressures.

Hope this is useful.

Thanks, I'll try 10 up to start and see how it goes (though it could be a chance to hasten the move to non-runflats smile).

You'll want to go a few PSI over what you'd use on the roads, but what you should do is come in every few laps and check the pressures - you'll find you need to let air out over the course of the day to compensate for the increase through heat.

Absolutely correct but 10-15psi sounds a bit much to me, i usually go about 4-6psi more than normal and it's fine, take some chalk and mark the top of the sidewalls, if the chalk is gone after a few laps the sidewalls are rolling over on themselves so add some more, if not leave alone
