Travelling from Devon to Edinburgh to view a car tomorrow - just passed 12 month MOT today, serviced last week fine, guy phones me to tell me the engine management light has just come on!!!! He says he is 100% sure its is the oxygen sensor as this faulted about 12 months ago (the sensor was not replaced just reset) on the 5th cylinder. I have booked flights etc and want the car if its right - we have agreed to go to BMW at 9am and get the car on an engine monitor to confirm the problem. If the oxygen sensor is faulty get it replaced and happy days - OR COULD IT BE AN INDICATOR OF BIGGER PROBLEMS!!! - do I cancel the flight and stay at home - advice needed urgently!!!!

It isn't a 'this engine is about to explode' light if thats what you are worried about.

It means one of the sensors has triggered a value thats outside acceptable range. In truth it could be anything but it's usually something reasonably straightforward like camshaft/crankshaft sensor, O2 sensor etc.

Fox, you are so good!!! So its not a deal ender - its the right colour combo - silver and black leather like yours - and the guy seemed pretty honest that the light had just jumped on! Could it not be a cracked manifold?

I've no idea if that would trigger the engine management light - it could do I guess but usually it seems to be a sensor somewhere.

Surely whatever it is diagnosed as will prove a useful bargaining point?

Even in the worst case scenario a working M52B28 engine is sub £1k these days. Not that I am for one minute suggesting that would be neccesary, but just answering the 'whats the worst that could happen' question.

I've only ever had the light on one occasion and I was mortified. Car wouldn't idle properly, light came on, and if you depressed the clutch on the Motorway it cut out altogether. Thought it was super serious. Dealer cleaned the idle control valve and 16 months later it's been fine touch wood..

I had a persistant engine management light problem on my E39 540i touring and after replacing all the oxygen sensors to little effect, found out that it was the air mass meter that was the problem. The unit was renewed and the problem disappeared.Dealer fit of the new air mass meter was approx.£300. The car had a mileage of around 80,000 at the time.
