535D durability

Does anyone have any experience of either high mileage or intense usage with a 535D?

I would normmally be looking to chop my 535D in around now but a combination of general economic uncertainty and lack of inspiration mean that I`m considering keeping the thing until it drops. I have two young children who have extraordinary abilities to trash cars so it`s kind of attractive to limit them to one car and perhaps "re-allocate" funds to another, more interesting, motor.

Trouble is that these are pretty complicated bits of kit and I am not sure of their ultimate durability. Car is currently on 45K miles and has the odd relatively minor problem but serious mechanical/electrical collywobbles would prove pretty boring.

Does anyone have experience or a view? should I keep it and run it into the ground over the next few years or will it be a liability?

45k come off it thats nothing. While reading it I presumed you either owned a 535d which had best part of 150k on it or were considering buying one for £15k with that milage.

45k... Why not keep it until its at 90k and re evaluate then or if your really worried Im guessing its still under 3 years old get a BMW extended warranty for total piece of mind one years warranty will cost you far less than 1 months depn off a new 535d + continue that into the future.

Current mileage isn`t really the issue, it`s more about whether I now plan to keep the thing until it`s happily into six figures or whether I change it over the next year or so. I wouldn`t have worried much about this in the past but it is a pretty complex bit of kit and I wonder about the long term durability...

Keep it for 3 further years so it will be 6 years old. You probably have lost £20k in 3 years however the next 3 years your going to lose about £10k and still have a car with 90k on it.

Why not just keep it until something starts to go wrong & then part x it/consider the repair cost. Or as said get an extended warranty to cover all the bits your worried about.

I saw a really nice black 535d Sport on the M4 this morning 05 reg - got me thinking thats going to be around the £20k mark milage dependant & pronav dependant it could be as low as £16k! So much car for the money

Out of interest whats the highest milage car you have owned bar your first car assuming it was a banger?

45k... on the VW 1.9 TDI units they are barely run in at that sort of milage, Id assume similar for BMW too.

As posted before, I have had no major issues outside of warranty with my 129k E61 535d. Depreciation has worked out at a modest 24ppm so far.

249,000 miles (and it was still running when I sold it). My concern is that the 535D with it`s twin turbo`s, intercoolers, and all of its electrickery will prove to be a bit fragile as it ages. These are not concerns I have with my other cars. The BMW is the family wagon and I cannot be arsed with trouble.

Purpose of post is to find out if anyone here has already done mega-miles on a 535D so I know what to expect. Current mileage is irrelevant to that and its currently warranted to the hilt.

Are you intending on keeping it until it dies or sell? Im wondering what you currently think its worth? Not sure on your original purchase price but as you state it has lost £31k over 129k miles.

Total piece of mind for the cost of a mobile contract very good VFM & if you do sell it in the future it will allow the next owner to carry on the BMW warranty if they so wish & could increase its saleability/residual vlaue slightly.

I think the cover drops off over 60K miles though, and there's an excess to pay too.

Waranty is nearer £70 a month on a 535d, well thats what I was told by BMW last month.

Hopefully I was wrong as I will be renewing mine monthly from Feb

Well given it is £70pcm = £840p.a. you need to consider the probablilty of failure and then you could pay this £70pcm into a savings internet account so IF there are any failures then just take it out of this fund hopeing that it is enough to cover the failure.

Still I'd expect every modern car to have no issue until its 8 years old.
Makes the fiat 5 years unlimited milage warranty very appealing.

There's the option of http://warrantydirect.co.uk too, but they're not massively cheaper.
