I have a 54 plate x5 with @ 80,000 miles on the clock and periodically the self levelling suspension light comes on. However, when it did this yesterday the rear offside suspension went hard and when I parked it I saw that it had "sat down" on this side. When I drove home it was fine.It didn't happen again this morning but I wonder if something nasty is looming? I don't tow very often. Any ideas, please?

Its likely the side that is down is the air bellows-they perish and crack, then eventually hole....they are replaceable, and arent to bad to fit. Think they cost about £180 each

Thanks Fw. I can hear air leaking so I will get it checked out on Monday. Is that £180 just for the parts?

When I had my E39 it had a similar problem. Audible loss of air and the left side would drop down over time then re-inflate when the engine started. I got a pair of replacement bellows for £100 from a scrappy and fit them myself. Dead easy on an E39, no idea on an X5 though?

Good advice thanks, Dave. Funnily enough the suspension didn't sit down last night so is it possible there might be a leak in some sort of valve rather than the bellows?
