How much is this e39 540 worth??
Discussion
X reg, black, 540 sport touring auto, sat nav, leather etc etc. 120k miles with full BMW history.
Anyone know what a reasonable offer would be on that car. I really want one, to replace my current Saab 95 Aero, and found out today a mate of mate has one that he'd be willing to sell!
Any comments/info much appreciated.

Aye, I don't think he'd take that little for it!
Glasses books them at a smidge over 3k but they seem very rare (black, sport, touring) so not a lot of reference.
Only looked round the outside of it today, looked very clean. I would have to sell my current car first though (Saab 95 aero). That aint gona happen at the moment is it!

It's probably worth more than 2.5k in bits. £1k for the nav, £500 for the interior, 500 quid for the Sport bumpers...
Remember, this guy isn't asking for a trade-in price. He's asking what to buy one for. Where are all these other facelift 540i Sport's for 2.5k?
The only facelift Sport I've seen recently with a 2 in front of the price was a 183,000 mile 530i Auto with a dent in the rear wing and laquer peeling off the front bonnet which went for £2750 on Ebay last week.
If 2.5k is all that a genuine, nice 540i Sport facelift is worth now with '120k' (You say that as if its the end of the world) then please let me know becuase I see no point sticking with my 530, I might as well trade up and enjoy that V8 rumble

Sorry, didn't notice the (antique) nav, make that £2750.
Its a seven year old V8 with 120k on, nothing dynamically special, and wooly steering, where's the market?
I think thats fair money if you're buying off a mates mate, or is he meant to offer top dollar for it?
I was thinking the OP was looking for a sensible offer to go in at, see if you can find one in the ring for more than 2-3k.

Just like most of us don't go to the wholesaler to buy tins of beans we dont go to the car auctions to buy cars. Trade price is relevant to most only when... trading a car in, I guess. Cars dont change hands on the private sellers market at trade money, if they did traders would buy from private punters with the benefit of being able to inspect before they buy.
I agree on the antique nav, though. I cannot for the life of me understand why the nav components are still worth so much. On ebay the screens, nav computers and radio modules all go for 250-300 quid EACH. It defies logic, especially as the more modern, superior Audi Navigation systems which are all inclusive sell for 400 quid all in..
You seem to be being a bit simplistic though 'its a 7 year old V8 with 120k on it' as if thats all that matters, I guess if thats the case I'm after a 7 year old flat 6 with 120k on it, reckon I can get a 996 for 2.5k as well
Having said that if the OP tries his luck at 2.5k and his mate says yes he's quids in, what a staggering car for the money, even though I presume it will explode at 125k (Isnt that what happens to cars with 6 figure mileage?).

I'll take the autobox as a spare..Looking on autotrader, non facelift non sport's are pretty cheap. However, the facelifted sports (big bumpers, small steering wheel etc) seem to be fectching more money.

HAving bought a 540 touring recently I found prices all over the place. Glass's wasnt representative cos the big V8s don't seem to be loved by the car trade.... I saw loads of cheap and not-so-cheap dogs...tourings seem to be fetching bit more cos of the specificity of the car.
As a guide I saw a MY 98 with 110k on clock go for £4250, a MY 99 with 125k go for £4900, a superb 97 with 128k with sport pack in pristine cond go for £3500 and another '97 with 140k go for £3300.

I haven't found many decent straight 6 E39s made after 1999 for much less than £3000, I paid £3400 for my V plate at 110,000 miles last month, but it did have FSH and quite well specced. Perhaps V8s are worth less, 120,000 miles on an X plate is much more than average though.
Only 13k ish per year, that's pretty average non? Can't see any reason why it wouldn't do another 80k at least, that's 10 years mileage for me!

If you don't have it I will give £3500 for it.
That is a genuine offer btw.
Well me buying the car depends on selling the Saab and that might not happen? That is a genuine offer btw.
Not even mentioned money to the guy yet but will hopefully will be going for a good look at it this weekend so will report back.
If things don't pan out for me in the next few weeks I will try and put you in touch.
