e36 M3 alarm sync

I have a e36 m3 evo with the two button alarm key fob (one red button one grey). The light on the fob lights up when pressed but the alarm does not activate.

I have followed a BMW factory alarm reset procedure starting with opening the boot lid etc... which didnt work.

I have also taken the glove box out to locate the alarm module to reset. However it was not obvious from the online descriptions where exactly the alarm module is. Can anyone point me in the right direction or provide links to diagrams or photos?
