'54 5 series and iPOD ???

Have just bought a 54 plate 530d with the single CD player in the dash and a 6 disc interchanger in the glove box. Does anyone have a view / experience to share regarding getting my iPOD to talk to the car stereo as there doesn't seem to be anywhere to plug into. Do these 'remote' gizmos you see in Argos and Currys work?

BMW do a kit that integrates with the i-Drive. The parts are about £150 and then ~2 hours labour to fit. So not cheap, but it does work pretty well, lets you see the track listings, selection by artist/album etc on the i-Drive.
