Z4 Coupe Buying Guide?
Discussion
I've been asked by a mate to help him buy a Z4C 3.0is Sport. Does anyone have a buying guide specifically for the 3.0 non-M version of the car? Google just returns lots of Z4MC info.
Also, what's the consensus on options? Any must-haves? Or must avoids?
He's interested in main dealer cars only, which sounds fine to me.
Thanks in advance.

The car is more or less the same as the Z4 roadster so its pretty bullet proof with very few issues.
The general Z4 buying guide will normally suffice......

Personally I only wanted one with 108 split rim alloy wheels, pearl grey interior and montego blue paint. I would also have liked xenons but there are not many around so its difficult to be too picky.

With regards to warranty, I believe the rules have changed in the recent years and if the car has full BMW service history then you can take out the BMW (Mondial) warranty but can't claim for the first month. Give them a call they are actually extremely helpful.
I bought a Z4 coupe just two weeks ago, trading in my E46 M3. Personnally it was only the Sport model that was of interest, this comes with 18" wheels, M-sport seats and M-sport steering wheel. The steering wheel really made a difference for me as silly as it sounds, the SE has a really thin wheel which just didn't feel comfortable, the sport has a much thicker wheel. The seats are pretty tight, I'm stick like and they feel tight on me, not sure how a heavy weight would get on.
The coupe came out in 2006 until 2008 and I don't believe, although am ready to be corrected, that the spec changed in that time. What I'm saying is there is no real advantage of going for an 08 plate over an 06 in regards to spec and you'll get a better deal on the older car. An example of this is my two local dealers had one each, one was an 08 plate with 52k miles and a low spec, the other an 56 plate with 28k miles and virtually every option. The 56 plate was cheaper and is now parked in my garage.
If buying from a main dealer, such as I did, you will get the years AUC warranty, minimum of a years MOT and if the car is due a service within 4k miles, that will also be done.
I didn't have any particular options in mind when I was looking, the sat nav is a nice addition, many people slag off the BMW system but it's perfectly adequate, not sure it's worth the 2k list price when new. It also allows much better use of an intravee if you want ipod control. Bluetooth is also a nice addition and works really well with my iPhone. Other options to consider are xenon headlights, I haven't driven one without but people seem to critical of the halogen lights.
Mine has the DSP stereo, which I'm very pleased with, certainly sounds better than the HK one I had in the M3. There are three different stereo options, standard six speaker, uprated ten speaker and the DSP which is also ten speaker.
Can't really think of anything else at the moment, if you have any specific questions feel free to ask, as you can tell I'm rather pleased with my purchase!

sjj84, would you mind sharing the spec of your Zed and how much you paid for your it?
I'm in the market for an AUC and I'm really picky with the options - Sport spec, black exterior, nav and xenons. Xenons seem to be really rare on these cars. There are less than five that meet my criteria (3.0si and M combined) on the AUC website.
The residuals of these seem to be rock solid too, the one I'm looking at is coming in at £21k and a similarly spec'd Z4M at £26k.

Are xenons worth it? In Porsche-land the standard halogens are like tea lights compared with xenons.I'm in the market for an AUC and I'm really picky with the options - Sport spec, black exterior, nav and xenons. When I came out of my E46 M3 I was looking at Z4MC and Z4C. Chose the non-M because it's more flexible and cheaper to run with minimal sacrifice in performance. Never regretted the decision.
Must haves are: Nav + Bluetooth, Xenons, heated seats (lovely). Logic 7 a bonus.

Mine has every option except cruise control and different dash trim or wheels, the dash and wheels obviously not really being 'extras' just different colours/styles. Price is difficult to give as I had a part exchange, it was advertised at £16.5 and after they gave me a cost to change I made them better it by £1000. If they took the £1000 off the price of the Z4 or gave me more for part exchange I don't know.
I guess it depends what your going to use it for in terms of what extras should be must haves. My car is a weekend B roads blaster so I did not place much value on interior extras such as nav, cruise and sound systems as most of the time I`m roaring along heading to nowhere in particular with my foot to the floor listening to the straight six growl.
For me it was more about the looks, sound and feel and to be honest I could probably have lived with the most basic spec of car if it was at the right price however. The extras I did get were a nice bonus.

UPDATE!
Mate has bought an awesome '57 plate Z4 Coupe. Ruby black metallic, dream red leather seats and a great set of options. No nav, thankfully; we saw a car that did have it and frankly it just looked crap plonked on top of the dash. The car he went for had Bluetooth, xenons and some other niceties. Bugger all miles, looked and drove like a new car.
Cracking cars these, I test drove it too and it was a pleasure to drive. I loved the front-engine / rear-drive balance and the creamy straight-six. The M-car would have to be very, very good to impress me more than this "cooking" 3.0si.
Thank you all for your help!

Nav, metallic & sound upgrades seem to be essential, doesn't need for much else. Glad I spec'd cruise - not expensive, very useful. I would be happy to look at private cars too though...
