528i MPG? (F10) or any one with a "28i" engine
Discussion
Yes I would recommend the engine. I have it in a 3 series which is slightly lighter than the 5 obviously, but it is very quick. Power delivery is strong and smooth and it'll keep up with a lot of bigger engines. It also cruises comfortably and has been completely reliable for me so far.

I prefer the 528i to the 530d, I know the 530d is quicker but the 28i feels like a proper BMW imho.
Even with a turbo 4cyl?.I hear these new engines are good, economical, powerful etc, but I have to admit I am struggling to understand how the engine configuration can be masked...even with copious sound insulation.
The 28i engine is a bit lighter in weight than the 30d unit I believe and in the F30 3 series this offers better weight distribution. I'm not sure if this is true of the 5 series. The power outputs are not dissimilar either; 245hp vs 254hp and in the 3 series 0-60 in 5.9 vs 5.6
The 28i engine sounds a bit heartless at idle but under load and when pressing on it sounds nice enough
The 28i engine model cars are cheaper than the 30d too I think. The only thing it lacks over the 30d in my opinion is the torque.

Given its a turbo, IME it doesn't feel NA of course. Its a fairly refined power delivery. BUT, you can tell its a 4 pot via the slightly thin noise and at idle it sounds like a diesel, a slightly dull tick from each injector.
Having said that, I'd have it, given I don't do the miles to warrant a diesel, the 28i engine offers performance, good for short trips, good economy, albeit not as refined as a 6 pot (though not that far off).
Can you tell the difference sat in it at idle, yes (well, if start/stop hasn't kicked in). Can you tell when overtaking or using it day to day, hardly.
