Just chipped a BMW 330D

Hi All,
New to this forum and also pretty new to chipping cars.
I've spend that last few days trawling through all the threads on this forum researching about chipping and jesus you guys know your stuff like!!!
Anyway I've got a small question........

Fitted it and took it for a spin and I was blown away with the increase in power, especially from 60 - 100! Torque was a little too high for the tyres I have so currently looking for some new wheels / tyres before really ragging it, but I totally love the power!!
Anyway back to said question. As you'll see from the pic there are a lot of additional wires, and not a lot of room under the engine cover so I have threaded the wires through the left hand side of the engine under the cover and under the Turbo??? Am far from a machanic and I know FA about engines so I think its the turbo..... The chips sitting near the drivers side front lights (right hand drive) As the engine get pretty hot under that cover will that set up be ok do you think? Last thig I want is an £80 chip causing a fire with £17k worth of damage lol.

It's 'generally' considered that the el cheapo tuning boxes don't really work very well when it comes to the actual altered program it contains. The 'program' or 'map' is a generic one and it'll 'most' likely only have altered the fuelling in order to give the performance boost.
The 'best' Tuning boxes are considered to come from the company called 'Tunit' who have centres around the UK. Their box, which is also well researched and probably alters other parameteres to get a good overall balance between them all are around £450 or so. here's their site

I used to have a Tunit, had it on for 5-6 months. I then sold it off and went for what's nowadays considered the 'best' way and that's to have a re-map done to my particular car. The difference is much better as I wanted the characteristics that i'd get good mpg and a good spread of the power and torque generated when I flicked to Sports mode on my Steptronic gearbox - I have an E39 Touring 3.0 litre Diesel.
If you research a little more, the el cheapo tuning boxes are generally shunned, Tunit and the much better made tuning boxes are a 'good' solution, and the best way is an individual re-map to your car which takes into account individual characteristics of your engine etc to provide the best re-map for it. Nowadays a decent re-map with a rolling road before and after test can be had for around £350+. If you want the re-mapper to spend more time trying out different maps to see which comes out best, you can pay extra for that.
Needless to say, some re-mappers are much better than others. Like any industry, there's people out there with a laptop and some generic maps who'll say they can 're-map', but they can't do so 'well'. I'd say search out the top end re-mappers who do this kind of thing as their core business. In the BMW world, there's a good 5-6 specialists like this. Just look in the BMW magazines, the forums etc and ring them all up to discuss and go with the one you feel best with.

Thanks for all the feedback, I was thinking about a remap, however, cant the setting be wiped when its seviced? I read that on a few forums. Also with the chip I can just take it out and revert back to orig setting if I want.

The chip that's installed looks very similar to that on Tuneit, very similar, it also has all the same setting as the one on Tuneit as well.
The power using the current chip is well evident, we timed 0-60 and it did it in 5.4 however, take into consideration that I had my mrs with her mobile phone being the stop watch lol so theres room for a sh&t load of human error there :P
Still, massive improvement on speed and the 70 - 100 was just epic compared to what it was.
Might consider a re-map for the future, just need new wheels first lol

If its a "cheapo" tune up box it may have a resistor type module in it which just tricks the ECU into thinking that the engine is not up to normal operating temperature, therefore "it "overfuels" it and thats basically it. Not sure of what damage could be caused by overfuelling but im sure thats not normal to run a car like that all the time.
now am gettin scarred and doing some more research lol

That box plugs in between the Rail pressure sensor and the ECU.
It will tell the ECU that the rail pressure is 200 bar lower than reality, so the ECU ups the pressure, driving the injection pump harder.
The ECU has no idea of the extra diesel being injected, so the torque limiters and smoke limiters are bypassed.
The best bit is the MPG...
The ECU will pass round the Injection quantity to the cluster and OBC for it to work out how far it's getting for what amount of of diesel.
And yes, the fact is now it's calculation is screwed up so under estimates the amount of diesel being injected.

That goes the same for any external tuning box, whether you pay £450 for one or not.

Because I'm such a scepitcalold b'stard, I read the OP's post and thought that he's the guy selling them on flea-bay and was doing a bit of covert free advertising.
The idea of having wires all over the engine bay and in particularly, near the 'turbo' is just plain daft. The idea of going for a tuppence hapeny solution on a E92 330d defies logic too.
However, I want proof that this thing can 'break traction' due to the improvement in torque. I also have a chipped 3.0d BMW (M54) and mine doesn't have the alleged potency you refer to.
Also being a sceptical old b'stard, I also alledge sir that you are in fact the infamous 'Carlos' of the 'chipped 335d' fame, masquerading as amongst us, thinking we haven't rumbled you!!!!!
