535D - First service cost..... Really???!
Discussion
Hi all
Four months in and the 535d has racked up 13k miles.
I can't quite get comfortable with having the first sumpful in there for 20k miles so called BMW to get a quote for the first service, which (they told me) is engine oil and microfilter.
And the cost is................. £340............
Apparently this is for oil and microfilter. So
1. Does it REALLY need a new microfilter after three months..... and
2. Does this sound right?
I assume I am getting bummed on the price of the oil.
Surely 6.5 litres of oil plus an oil filter plus a microfilter shoud be nowhere near £300?

Takes me less than 30 minutes to do an oil and filter change on my 530d and that is on my driveway and includes jacking it up. The longest part is waiting for the oil to drain!
Cost of oil £100 (BMW rates so being generous here)
Cost of Micro Filter £30 - 40 (again BMW rates)
Labour - ask them how much labour they are charging for....but £100 p/h...
Maybe they charge you another hour to look everything over, checks etc?
I always use a new micro filter when changing the oil - not sure it is necessary especially after such a short time but I feel bad if I dont! Given it is a first service I would definately do it as the first couple of oil changes can flush out debris.
When I do mine at home and buy the oil and filter myself it costs me about £80
Totally agree but it's a new car and I am on a PCP and don't want them bending me over come the end of it.Cost of oil £100 (BMW rates so being generous here)

Isn't the microfilter the cabin filter?Cost of oil £100 (BMW rates so being generous here)

Can't see why that would need changing at 3 months old, they've just quoted for a first year service.

I realise you wont want to do it yourself if it is a new car - just trying to give you an idea of my time & costs vs theirs.
Re the cabin filters there are 2 on a 5 series and they are stupidly expensive (£40 each on mine although cheaper if you buy them as part of a service pack with a fuel filter), carbon filters or something like that. I dont think they are mileage related in terms of changing them, I change mine every 2 - 3 years and have not noticed any difference either way. They are a 5 min job to change. I would definately opt out of that cost if you can
That'll be the difference then!!Re the cabin filters there are 2 on a 5 series and they are stupidly expensive (£40 each on mine although cheaper if you buy them as part of a service pack with a fuel filter), carbon filters or something like that. Quick question - the service disply says "engine oil" as the next service due in 7000 miles.
I assume if I have that done then the display with then say "Inspection in 19000" or somesuch??
Do BMW still do that, that is Oil/Inspection 1/Oil/Inspection II/OIl etc etc??

Now that you've found out you're on the service sceheme, I'd be suprised if BMW did the service now. In my experience the service couldn't be done until it was within 1000 miles of when it was due.
100% correct, they plan covers the service when the car demands it, but not otherwise.I am on a 30k a year lease, car is only three months old and 13k miles. I'll just run it to 19k then get it done. Car will be replaced within the three years anyway.

It better had be - if you carry on at the current mileage the excess mileage charge is going to be hefty. So if I go 20,000 over it will be £1400. Not too much of a worry. Just been a heavy quarter for travel.
